  • Wallpaper craziness

As most of you already know, I live in charming little house that has been wallpapered to within an inch my sanity.

I've finished Caleb's room except for putting up some shelves for knick knacks.

Now, I am going to start Sophie's room. Tonight I was looking at the wallpaper on the door of her closet (yep, on the door) and I peeled back one corner to see what I am dealing with in her room. It is crazy. Instead of a vinyl covering with a paper backing, it is a vinyl covering with a woven fabric backing. I swear it looks like a heavy duty cheesecloth. I am hoping that it means that stuff will come off more easily.

DiggityDot - any thoughts on this? I will try to get pics of it later.

Sounds almost like some commercial wallpapers. If so, yikes. That shit is a PITA to remove. Score it and then apply the DIF gel with a roller. You may even find that you HAVE to steam, but the DIF gel is usually a better choice.

On the upside, if you can loosen up that paste enough with the DIF gel, the fabric backing might make it come off in I'll sheets. Most vinyl-coated wall coatings become a pain to remove because the paper backing tears and ends up coming off in pieces.

In C's room there was no way to score it enough to allow the liquid to penetrate to the backing, so I ended up just pulling vinyl off the backing and the soaking the backing and scraping it off.

I am hoping that the fabric backed paper in S's room will come off more easily. Some googling shows that if the walls were properly prepped (a HUGE if) then it is possible to pull it off completely. The corner I tested looks like it will come up relatively easily. Meaning, lots and lots of work, but without the hideousness of scraping.

Mojo? Is is appropriate to ask for mojo here? Because I bought paint for her room today. Shit has to get done now.

Wallpaper should almost fall off the wall in sheets when removing if the surface is prepped correctly when it is applied. The problem is that the prep takes time and energy and few people want to spend more time and energy doing adequate prep.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't properly prepped. I am just hoping to get by without having to have it skim coated again. BLECH!

Good luck!!! I hate wallpaper with a passion, and I only had one full room and two rooms with borders.

I used to do the grunt work of peeling wall paper for my best friends construction company as a teen. Most tedious crap in the world but at least I got to hang out with my best friend and make money. I feel your pain. Sending mojo because why not right?

All this wallpaper talk makes me think of the short story "The Yellow Wallpaper."

The woman basically goes mad. Wallpaper is involved.

                        I hope that isn't prophetic.

Actually, now that I've googled a bit on the fabric backed wallpaper, I am itching to get into her room and try it. If I don't have to scrap can just tear it off it will be so much easier. I am going to try the doors first and see if I can get it off in one sheet or if I am going to have to do the soak and scrape method.

More than anything, I just want to avoid damaging the walls. It isn't the work that scares me. It is the thought of having to deal with skim coating again that makes me nauseous. It takes sooo long for the walls to dry out.
