Now that I've established the habit I can be a little more lax -- I really only NEED to be at the gym by 7:30 on Wednesdays and Fridays but most other days I still get there early.

And you will certainly adjust to working out first thing. It has turned into a sacred time, even if it's at a gym. Also, between the FitBit challenges and the fact that the same 3-5 people are at the gym every morning it's a nice accountability routine.
I really loved the feeling of being totally awake before 9am, LOL! And instead of getting home from a family hike (which is really just an hour-long stroll, not too strenuous) and saying "I don't want to run because I don't need more exercise," it was the other way -- already had the run, and can't decline a walk with my family, so I got extra exercise for the day. Bonus! I am not sure I can do it on school days though, and I don't usually need to since I get some blocks of free time most days, so it'll mostly be a weekend thing for now, and then a summer thing. But I might try to hit the road as early as I can after they get on the bus…

I'll be facing same issues at Ambulance school. Normally I run about 11.30am but it'll have to be 7am or 7 PM for 10 weeks

Glad you've managed it, just need to do same.

I've been meaning to say -- don't discount the power of training, and building base endurance. It's amazing how the tiniest muscles can build strength, which leads to improvements in form and lessens the effect even of all that pounding impact. Last year (and previously when I ran years ago) I used to get tweaks in my knees right at 3 miles (like, I had to limp home because running ceased to be an option) and figured, "Oh, three miles must be my limit." But I built up some base and got some good stretching routines, and then it didn't happen until 5 miles. So maybe 5 miles was my limit? But a little more training and a lot more stretching, and it stopped altogether (though my foot would cramp up terribly in the mornings) and I was running up to 7-8 miles for my long runs last summer. This year I've built up much more slowly, plus I have my snazzy shoes, and I have yet to have a really uncomfortable run -- currently doing distances of 3-5 miles. YMMV, and cross training is great (I actually recently became truly convinced of this and I am planning to cross train on the bike once the weather gets a bit better) but maybe don't discount running altogether yet.

                      • DH said something similar, so I'm going to keep at it!

He uses a cool program called Golden Cheetah to track his cycling workouts, base improvements, and fatigue. It's really neat!

                        • Hubby has a crazy spreadsheet. He likes to track his power per heart rate and some other weird metrics. During the Altitude Tent Incident of 2015 he was able to brag of some measurable improvements, so I guess there's that.

                              • DH worked all night, so I knew I wouldn't be able to run this morning with two kids in tow.
Went to work out, and she had us doing sprint intervals peppered with bodyweight exercises for an hour straight (sprint intervals for 45 seconds, bodyweight for 1 minute).

So much for being worried about speedwork training! 😄
