  • I just finished The Elementary Particles and hated it. no wonder critics say Houellerbecq doesn't know how to write a story. it had absolutely no direction until 3/4 of the way through when I remembered a review said everyone dies. ugh. I can't believe I finished it. (and he's been my favorite author all year!)

    • Do we want to resume book club? I've been on break for two weeks and am already starting to get bored.

      • I'm reading Jane Eyre — just finished chapter 4. This is a slow read.

        • Barbara Vine (aka Ruth Rendell) The Chimney Sweeper's Boy--- It's just right for my craving. I was looking for a British-y, non-bloody mystery. It's getting a little wordy at the end, though. Sometimes these slower, more character driven than plot driven mysteries trail off with a whimper instead of a nice solid finish.

I can really complain about ANYTHING. It's a gift.

I'm about to start The Girl With All The Gifts. Paranormal thriller.

And -- also appropriate to the reading thread --- I just hung up my hammock in the garden.

What was next? My class ends Thursday and I'm going on vacation Friday (Yesssss!) so I'll have some free time to read.

I'm currently 40% through Gabaldon's latest, Written in My Own Heart's Blood. I'm not enjoying it as much as I'd hoped. :/ Still working on the Chua book too (Tiger Mom).

If you want a lighter, more YA-ish series that has similarities to Outlander (it's 11th century Wales, instead of more recent history), I'm currently in the middle of the "after Cilmeri" series by Sarah Woodbury (http://www.sarahwoodbury.com/the-after-cilmeri-series/) and enjoying it now that it's getting going; the first couple books are a little rough, but still interesting.

                • LSW - I am sooo looking forward to that series. I meant to bring "The sweetness" but forgot the damn thing on my bedside table. Also found "I am half-sick of shadows" on sale at B&N so bought that too but intend to read them in order. I've heard their fabulous. I'll report back to you when I finish the first one!

And The Language of Flowers was wonderful. Oh my god I loved it. It was great - sad and triumphant all at once!!

I started and finished the new Jennifer weiner "all fall down" which was a waste of time and money. Now I'm reading "The Vacationers" which I'm enjoying a lot so far.

I loved the CS Lewis space trilogy when I was growing up! I was always suspicious that no one read them because they aren't allegorical. Did you know that one was the first of three?

I just finished "Things we Set on Fire" which was beautiful, and both heartbreaking and heartwarming. I spent so long reading book reviews I was starting to feel paralyzed. So I went to the Kindle sale store and just bought that one. I'm really glad I read it. Anyone would wants to 'borrow' it I'm sure I can do the share thing.

Picked up Middlesex yesterday. Hubby's suddenly started taking the iPAD to work again. I swear he inherently wants whatever device I've been using most. So I'm reading a physical book. Several times I've had the impulse to click on a word for a reminder definition. Ha!
