What are you reading?

LSW - I got Bittersweet off of the library waiting list yesterday and have already gotten ~100 pages in. It was totally not what I was expecting - even after reading the description - and I'm feeling exciting and thrown by it. Are you liking it? I'm hoping it doesn't turn out to be something silly or predictable, and at this point I have no idea where it's going.

I just picked up Allegiance. I'm teenager-excited about it.

Our new (rocking) public library branch has a separate teen room. They have their own librarian, computers, hang out areas, study desks, etc. It's so cool to see teens find their own place in the public library. There were a handful of kids hanging out there. They have a full activity program too, including a divergent evening to learn your faction, books clubs, book challenges, writing workshops, poetry nights, etc.

I love stories. It's such a joyful and unique part of the human experience.

Just finished a reading binge. The Girl With All The Gifts - summer read for those that like The Walking Dead The Line and The Source (Witching Savannah series) - good witchy mysteries. First is better than second. We Were Liars - Halfway in, sounds similar to the Bittersweet description. What's with the mysteries set in Kennedy-esque settings? I'm heading for Bittersweet next. Hope it's good!

I wasn't at all expecting a mystery/psychological thriller so I'm really excited. But I don't want to be disappointed so I keep worrying that the outcome will be something ridiculously stupid like they are all secretly robots or something like that/farming other humans, etc.

Middlesex: I really came to like Cal. Strongest point of the book for me. I loved the how and who this character turned into. However I'd choose character development over plot twists any day so all the 'unexpected' plot twists up until the end were annoying. I was bored through most of the background/history of the family too.

I think I've decided to just keep reading famous, award winning books, but undecided if I want to read Virgin Suicides (same author) or switch gears to some Cormac McCarthy or Margaret Atwood. hm....

If you like darker, Cormac McCarthy is the way to go.

Great term! I've been on a YA dystopian kick. I'm currently reading Maze Runner, and I read The Selection trilogy before that. It's summer; why not?

Thomas Harris does great serial killers. Chilling. I think I liked Red Dragon better than Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins killed it in the movie, though. No pun intended.

I thought so too! Do you recommend the last one? That's the only Hannibal book and movie I've never touched. And Thirteen, right?! So good.

OK so a tad hungover I read all of The Road today. Just DL'ed Eugenide's newest The Marriage Plot. NYT review sold it.

Just finished the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. Amazing books.

Just finished 'Bittersweet' and IMO, it was NOTHING at all like I was expecting it to be. Somewhere in the book description I missed the fact that this was tagged as a psychological thriller/american gothic novel and I was not disappointed once I set myself up for some sort of chilling mystery. LSW, I am with you on the characters...the family itself was detestable even though it seems Lu and Tilde had some redeeming qualities. But man, that one kept me guessing until the end!

I finished listening to 'Middlesex' yesterday as well and I really enjoyed about 85% of it. I thought the writing was great and I was captivated and somewhat horrified by some of the story, but it petered out in the end and I was a little disappinted.

I got "I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You" on Audible yesterday and am enjoying it so far.

Rainbow Rowell's newest 'Landline' arrived on Tuesday and I'm about a third of the way through. I'm really enjoying that one as well.

Not sure what else I'll dig into next...maybe "All the Light We Cannot See" or something a little lighter?
