The chef influence thing occurred to me after I posted that last message. I don't know if that is part of it or not; a lot of them do seem pretty prima-donnaish. I'm trying to remember any other male autobiographical books I've read recently...Stephen Fry and Bill Bryson are the only two that come to mind, and I did really like both of them, but they're both very self-deprecating. Hm.
