I agree with Ladybug. I also think picking a list might be good. Less decision making. We could read a "best of" list. Joining in when you can or when you like the book for the month also sounds like a great plan.

We could put up a banner announcement across the forums with the book of the month and the weekend discussion starts. The great thing about doing a club online is that you don't have to find a meeting time that works for everyone!

And yes - you can just create a poll for the books if you'd like.

If you need any help with administration, I think you've got several admins in on this idea. Actually, vBulletin has a lot of tools and capabilities so I don't think Goodreads would be necessary at all. You just have to let us know what you are looking for and we can help set it up.

We can also make a book club group on here if you want ... or stick the forums. We are going to be removing the location groups in January as they have been placed into the forums themselves, so a book club group would be more visible.

I don't know if I can keep up with extra reading since I've got a fat stack I need to get through but I'll be interested in taking a look at the selection. DD, the one IRL book group I was in ended up being never taking the book out of our bags and spending Friday night eating and drinking

I like the idea of the book club group. So far I have a grand total of 1 book recommendations. I know this is a busy time of year but I sort of wonder how much participation we'll have if people don't even find a book to submit. hmmm?

Haha maybe we do better just being told what to read? I have trouble sending PMs from my phone, and never remember when I get on the computer. I've been meaning to suggest Flowertown.

I'm on my phone too - my suggestion was The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

So will this be a fiction book club or will we occasionally do nonfiction like Daring Greatly? So you pm with your book selection? That is so wide open. I'd do better with a list. Will this only be open to those of you in the private section?

Ooo -- I have been meaning to pick Goldfinch up. It is constantly checked out at the library. I may need to buy it. I'm also interested in S by Doug Dorst. He wrote it with JJ Abrams and it's physically really appealing -- lots of inserts, and part of the plot taking place in notes in the margins.

LOL, I put a hold on the audiobook version of Goldfinch at my local library. As of today I'm user number 72 out of 73 waiting for one of the libraries 5 copies.

Because I'm somewhat taking charge it's easiest for me to read a private message than make sure I've sifted through every post on this thread. I said previously to recommend whatever you want, fiction or non just make sure it's not blatantly sexual, political, or religious. Even those qualifiers are up for debate, I suppose, but no one has argued them yet

Once I receive a decent number of recommends / or it's been so long I've given up hope anyone else will submit I'll post them as a poll on a new thread and you fine IMSN peeps can put the books to a vote, highest votes read first.

Also, it's fine if you'd rather suggest the book on this thread, I've been pretty good at keeping up but just runs the risk that I'll miss it.

Sounds good. You can also decide on a few books by executive order ... since we're all so helpful!

A fair number of us have gotten through the first two books on the Book Club list, Goldfinch, and Flowertown. Tied for three are The Storyteller and Someone. We agreed after a few months it may be better to come up with a new list depending on who ended up participating and how many more people are interested. It's been almost 5 months since we put the list to a vote, I'm inclined to say lets come up with a new list.

What do you think? New list, or choose either Storyteller and Someone?

Also, to those who have participated, are you happy with the discussion that's taken place? Anyone want to take up the task of leading discussions / generating questions? I don't think I know enough about literature to do it.

I'd vote for a new list. I have a few books on deck for me that I'd love to offer up in case anyone else was interested in reading them as well.

I'm currently reading The Fault in Our Stars. I hesitate to nominate a book I've just started, but yes!

I just finished and it was amazing. Not how I expected it to end.
