Hello! Not sure if I should even be here yet, but thought I'd say hi and see if it OK.
My husband is going to be taking the MCAT next week.
We're both 11 years out of college, and for the past two years, he's been taking Biology and Organic Chemistry classes, as they're the only med school prereqs he didn't already have (and do well in) as an undergrad getting his CS/EE double-major. He's also been doing lots of volunteering (free health clinic, local ER, national disaster medical team)
If I let myself think about it, I get a little freaked out. We'll be living on my salary (eek! We think it'll be OK, but...), and neither of us wants to move for him to go to school, which leaves us with OHSU (which is great, he knows people there, etc., but it's unusual to only apply to one school, isn't it?). I recently stumbled across mention of an "early decision program", which sounds perfect...except I have no idea if OHSU does early decision or not, and the lack of mention on their site would imply not; does anyone know?
Apart from the logistics of applying and getting in, I'm worried about all the horror stories I hear about marriage sucess rates through med school and residency. I'm hoping our older age and 9 years of dating/marriage history give us an edge, there, but I know there's no way to really prepare for the likely stress it's going to put on us both. I also have these flashes of worry that I'll be "left behind"; we work at the same company now, and while he makes more, we're on reasonably equal footing socially and such; we're not in completely separate worlds, and I'm worried about that shift.
Any suggestions on what kinds of things I can do to help? Any tips on applications, especially to just one school (anyone else done that?)? Any experience with OHSU in particular, any tips for me for when he'll be practically living there?
Sorry this is so scattered; thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions/calming mantras!
