Hello! Not sure if I should even be here yet, but thought I'd say hi and see if it OK.

My husband is going to be taking the MCAT next week.

We're both 11 years out of college, and for the past two years, he's been taking Biology and Organic Chemistry classes, as they're the only med school prereqs he didn't already have (and do well in) as an undergrad getting his CS/EE double-major. He's also been doing lots of volunteering (free health clinic, local ER, national disaster medical team)

If I let myself think about it, I get a little freaked out. We'll be living on my salary (eek! We think it'll be OK, but...), and neither of us wants to move for him to go to school, which leaves us with OHSU (which is great, he knows people there, etc., but it's unusual to only apply to one school, isn't it?). I recently stumbled across mention of an "early decision program", which sounds perfect...except I have no idea if OHSU does early decision or not, and the lack of mention on their site would imply not; does anyone know?

Apart from the logistics of applying and getting in, I'm worried about all the horror stories I hear about marriage sucess rates through med school and residency. I'm hoping our older age and 9 years of dating/marriage history give us an edge, there, but I know there's no way to really prepare for the likely stress it's going to put on us both. I also have these flashes of worry that I'll be "left behind"; we work at the same company now, and while he makes more, we're on reasonably equal footing socially and such; we're not in completely separate worlds, and I'm worried about that shift.

Any suggestions on what kinds of things I can do to help? Any tips on applications, especially to just one school (anyone else done that?)? Any experience with OHSU in particular, any tips for me for when he'll be practically living there?

Sorry this is so scattered; thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions/calming mantras!

One issue with OHSU you might want to look into -- The Oregonian ran an article in recent months about the low in-state student rates at OHSU. The Oregon Medical Society (or somesuch organization) is critical of OHSU for taking so many out of state students.

Applying to one school -- my husband did that (after a prior year of applying to more than one school and not getting in). It worked out fine and wasn't terribly unusual at that time.

    Best wishes!

Hi, nmh; thanks for your reply!

Yeah, we know about the OHSU instate record; we're hoping they'll start to skew it the other way this year because of that exposure.

When your husband re-applied, did he retake the MCAT, or not? Was the one he got into one he'd applied to the first time?

He did not re-take the MCAT. The med school he attended was one that he re-applied to. Rather, the only one he re-applied to. The biggest changes to his application were work experience (new job in research), recommendations (from new employer), and a new and improved essay. I can't recall any other major changes.

welcome to the forum. i think now is the perfect time to join! My husband has an engineering back ground as well, it was an asset in his applications because they saw him as a "problem solver". plus, with only one application to work on, he can make it GREAT. we were just in portland last week checking out ohsu for residency possibilies. we loved portland and ohsu is a beautiful hospital. it's currently at the top of our list. good luck and keep up updated!

Welcome!! My Dh and I are Oregonians and we can't wait to get home. Dh will finish residency next year and he's beginning to look for jobs in Oregon. YEAH!

This is a good point. My Dh applied twice to OHSU. He was wait listed both times. Although he had excellent stats he did not get in. (I'm not bitter about this or anything ) This also happened to couple of other friends of ours (also Oregonians). I'm not saying this will happen to you, but if your DH really wants to go to medical school you may want to consider applying to other schools too.

Wow; thanks for all your replies. Good to hear from other Oregonians and others who love the PNW. Maybe we'll get to meet some of you one of these days if you do move out here! I'm really bummed to hear about in-state applicants getting waitlisted and NOT getting in; when I mentioned it to DH, he said he knew; they only got about 60-some deep into their wait list this last year, apparently, which is mildly discouraging news.

There's a remote possibility that I could transfer my job to another location in another city my employer's in if it came to that, but neither of us wants to move; we love our house and our neighborhood and this part of the country (I grew up in Seattle). DH did say just the other day "well, if I don't get in, I can just keep working at my job" (I think he's trying to keep himself from being horribly disappointed if he doesn't get in)...there are always other possibilites, too; try again next year, do some more prereqs and go into a PA or nursing program. He's already 34; another year or two isn't going to make much difference, except that we'll have that much more money saved up from both of us working. We'll figure out what to do if+when he doesn't make it in, I guess. I prefer to believe he'll make it in.

He's been studying like crazy for the MCAT (it's *this Saturday*, eek!); he also has a quiz in his ochem class this Thursday. On the upside, he took the "sample MCAT" (the official one), this past weekend and got a 42, so he's cautiously optimistic, having read online that it hasn't seemed significantly easier than the "real thing" to others in the past. Hopefully that's true!

                wow..

Hi again! I rediscovered this forum, and my computer had my username and password stored, so I was able to find this old post.

DH did *really* well on the MCAT, and ended up only applying to OHSU and UW (MD/PhD in both cases). He didn't even get an interview with UW, which didn't surprise us all THAT much (they are *really* unlikely to interview an out-of-state white male), but that has left us with just OHSU.

I cannot even express how utterly frustrating applying at OHSU is. As far as I know, every other school lets all their applicants know what's up by the end of March. OHSU is STILL jerking around most of the people who had interviews. Applicants have been calling them and posting what they've been told at the studentdoctors.net forums, and every person seems to get a slightly different story, so nobody knows what's really going on. General consensus seems to be that May 15th is the drop-dead date for letting people know, but that's all anybody seems to know for sure. Grrrrr.

                So. Tired. Of. Not. Knowing!!!

Keep your fingers crossed for us, please! I have a feeling this last week of waiting is going to be the hardest. *sigh*.

Good luck and try not to stress too much about it. It sounds like he is an excellent candidate and definitely should do well in the process. Only less than 2 weeks to go...

                          Gah!!!

So the rumor mill in the OHSU thread on the studentdoctor.net forums is running wild, but it appears that they did *finally* make their final determinations this afternoon, and will be sending letters out tomorrow, and if we call tomorrow, they can let us know then.

I think I'm more nervous than he is...or he's hiding it better.

Well, at least the waiting's over.

"unable to offer you a spot".

                            *sigh*.

I feel horrible. If we were willing to move, he'd have gotten in any NUMBER of other places, but we both love the PNW, and own our house, and my job is here...and this is absolutely the *worst* place to want to live if you want to apply to med school.
