  • Political Quiz

Not that I think there is anything inflamatory about the quiz -- but just b/c politics always lands us in here. I figure I'll save the admins a step.

I'm 24 between Colin Powell and George Bush. Really I am a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. I don't give a flip what you want to do as long as it doesn't harm anyone, and I want government out of my wallet and personal life.

            28. Though I'd almost forgotten about Jack Kemp. Didn't forget about Bush '42 though.

I got a 36. But I wasn't too impressed with several of the questions.

For example, the one about gay marriage was "15. Gays and lesbians should be able to marry or at least be treated as married under law if they so desire. Agree or Disagree?" Well, wait a second. What if you're a state's rights proponent and think that this is an issue to be decided by each state? You'd have to answer "disagree," because--based on all the other questions--it sounds like the questionaire is referring to FEDERAL laws--even if you don't have a problem with gay marriage. You just have a problem defining it under federal law. In addition, the question doesn't recognize that some people just don't want to refine the traditional term "marriage," but have no problem recognizing gay unions (thereby extending matrimonial-like rights to gays). How do you answer? If you answer "agree," it sounds like you support either redefining marriage or advocating for gay unions.

Additionally, I sure am glad that there was a "neither" answer to the question regarding who you see as more extreme, Jocelyn Elders or The Rev. Jerry Falwell. I mean, come on, they're each extreme in their own way! The question really is, "With whose extreme beliefs do you find yourself with more in common." Thank goodness there was a "neither" answer...

And that question about whether "graphic pornography" should be banned? First, banned by whom? The feds or the states? That makes a big difference. And second, what's "graphic"? Child porn? Hustler? Do we need to resurrect Justice Potter Stewart to let us "know it when he sees it"? Are we talking about banning depictions of the criminal exploitation of children (clearly, a proper role for government) or are we talking about banning all porn (Playboy, etc.) under a Catherine MacKinnon/Aundrea Dworkin-type theory of "all porn is rape" (and is thus criminal)? Anyhow, anyone who believes less government generally is better when talking about regulating the choices and behaviors of adults (the conservative position) would have answered "no"...but that would appear, in this rudementary poll to be voting a liberal response.
