Brandi, can you weigh in a little bit? What should I look for? Who is up and coming?

        • Very cool! We just watched the men's all-around competition and most of the women's. We're slow with catching up, and I can't stay up super late to watch. I'm annoyed that they gave that good luck towel more coverage than the actual competition. And that's not an exaggeration, because they showed one stinking apparatus for the silver medalist? Seriously, a TOWEL??

          • Yeah I am getting more and more fed up with the coverage. If I see one more clip of Jordyn Weiber crying with somebody saying "that's an image we don't want to see again", one more time..

If you don't want to see it again, stop showing it!!!!!!

            • You know I love the theory behind the Olympics but maybe its time to see them go - how much does each country spend on sending athletes, paying athletes for medals, etc. not to mention all of the money (I think I read $15 BILLION!) that GB has spent hosting/building, etc. and how many of these venues will be in shambles in just a few years. With the economies the way they are is this really the best way to be spending all of this money?

You raise a good consideration. It depends on the country. When the US has hosted, it's never lost money because Americans like the Olympics and they LOVE when it's in their timezone. For China, it was a great "coming out party" and I think it will be the same for Rio. For London, it was never going to be that way. Londoners love to complain and Europe isn't in a great place financially right now. I'm excited for Rio because it will be closer to US timezones so there will be fewer spoilers. Brazil has been a pretty big bright spot in the global economy and is definitely an emerging powerhouse as a developing economy so I think it'll be great. Not sure on the Winter Olympics venues.

                • Is no one upset that Aly didn't get a bronze medal, yet incredibly impressed at the way she handled it? Such a classy young lady! The gymnastics coverage in general has been almost none compared to every stinking qualifying swimming race.

As for money, when Chicago was bidding on the Olympics there were several projections that showed it would not, in fact, make money and tax payers would be stuck with the bill.

                  • I was very impressed at her composure after losing. I was pissed that the gymnastics was all televised so freaking late. I don't care to see all of the swimming prelim heats, unless something spectacular happened. I would much rather watch the actual gymnastic routines. It's not like they don't have time to edit out the wait times.

                    • At least gymnastics has a set tie breaker and yes, he handled it very well. What is wrong with Gabby's hair? It's typical black hair, right?

As for the money then I guess they should change who can bid for them, you have to wonder I'd one of the only reasons London got this was because its the Queen's jubilee year. I hope Rio goes well, with their crime issues I worry about their attendance too. We're hoping for Japan in 2020, we'd like to go.

And the only reason the gymnastics is on so late is because they know people will stay up to watch it and I also don't understand why they show SO much swimming.

                      • And i hate that they only showed Americans or people who won medals. Half of the fun of the Olympics is getting to watch somebody you've never heard of from some random country have their moment in the spotlight.

                        • We stayed at a hotel night before last so we watched a bit of Olympics coverage (men's all-around, some synchronized diving and 8-man crew). We were close to the border and the cable channels included CTV, so we were watching Canadian broadcast -- very little chatter, lots of relevant footage, a bit of a focus on Canadian strengths but plenty of enthusiasm for non-Canadian and little-known athletes. I hear there's a way to use proxy servers to trick the CTV site into thinking you're in Canada and letting you stream coverage? I am tempted to try it.

                          • The online live coverage from NBC is actually awesome, too. I was annoyed at them at first, but I think they've gotten the bugs worked out. I have my phone set up with live streaming right now, and the video is clear, everything is available as it happens, and they show all the action. I watched most of the women's all-around gymnastics on live stream yesterday, and they showed nearly all the routines, with semi-intelligent commentary (that I think must have been a British feed).

Right now I have sailing on, and I have no clue what is going on, but I love that it's there! (Tulips, come teach me some day!) There isn't any commentary, but they actually have decent explanatory graphics.

Anyway, just one vote for NBC's mobile and online coverage.

From the only city to ever REJECT the Olympics by popular vote, haha.

If you watch the 49ers (men's performance double-handed), the skipper is my college teammate and good friend. The crew was a frequent competitor in college. I sailed with or against about 2/3 of the sailors in this year's Olympics (and several from other countries). It is SO cool to see them all. Also, I LOVE LOVE LOVE that the sails have the stars and stripes on them - it's pretty cool to round the mark and watch a huge flag spinnaker open.

I will do sailing lessons any time for any MSNers if we're in the area and near water.
