    GMW,

It is what it is. I'm sorry the choice for you came down to someone you didn't really support. I'm sorry there was this trend of people who did get attacked so consistently and often viciously if they chose to share their true choice, especially online. I've been pretty horrified by what I've seen on social media, even among my own family.

I have never felt so marginalized or vulnerable in my life. It's beyond horrible that on this 78th anniversary of Kristallnacht, I spent the day obtaining passports for my children "just in case" we will need to flee our country. I understand a vote against Clinton or a vote for a third party candidate whose platform speaks your values or even abstaining from voting all together if the candidates are unappealing. But I cannot understand a vote for Trump when there is such overwhelming evidence of his deception, misogyny, racism, and divisiveness.

I've given up attempting civil discourse. It's pointless, and I don't participate in uncivil discourse. People seem to feel genuinely entitled to say nasty, personalized comments because they feel that the election is a nasty, personalized attack upon them. There is no acknowledgement that people can thoughtfully disagree. It is demonizing and blame-placing.

There is no acknowledgement that people can thoughtfully disagree. It is demonizing and blame-placing,often coupled with overemoting and hyperbole. For example, calling Trump voters racists. Well, if that's your starting point understanding, I doubt we can have a real conversation because I can't agree with you very baseline.

FWIW, I'm not generalizing that all Trump voters are racist. But to vote for Trump, they are willing to disregard or at least tolerate racist overtones of his campaign and the endorsement of campaign by hate groups. Likewise, not all Germans were racist. They were trying to help themselves out of a bad position and found themselves on a slippery slope when they elected an authoritative leader.

Wasn't aimed at you...cross-posting. You didn't call Trump voters racists. But there certainly are many people who do.

Although the implication that we are silently willing to endorse racism I would not agree with. But I don't think he's a racist. I understand that many people feel otherwise. But, in general, when people draw equivalencies to the Nazis and the circumstances that led to Nazism, I bow out.

I don't agree that this isn't also the DNC/Hillary Clinton's fault. This should have been a LAYUP for her. She's a career civil servant, she should have overwhelmingly carried many constituencies that just didn't show up for her (urban, minority voters -- Trump got more black votes than Romney...WHAT?) or should have been shoe ins to vote for her (union workers). Everybody ignored the rural voters who have been left behind. I saw an article that said, "at least politicians PRETEND to care about more urban voters, they don't even pretend to care about all the "racist hicks" in rural America".

I hate the outcome but I fault the DNC/Hillary for running such a shitty race. Trump has very little to offer many of the non-college educated people who voted for him. She should have made that resoundingly clear and she didn't.

Trump has LITERALLY NEVER RUN FOR OFFICE BEFORE. He basically stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. And somehow he won.

I agree with you, GMW. I don't care for Trump, but I feel like there is just as much hate coming from the other side, so I'd rather just not discuss it than be attacked.

I will graciously bow out because I could never understand how anyone could vote for trump. Maybe because I'm Hispanic and it hits way to close to home? Maybe because already I've had to deal with it here and my husband already had a taste of it at work? He brought out the worst in people. How can I sit here listen and read on woman voted for him. I haven't heard of a good reason to over look all the hateful things he has said his entire campaign except for " get over it" and it's something I can't at the moment do.

I'm out, guys. I have no interest in being accused and attacked. I was just explaining why I don't generally talk about the election, and why I suspect a lot of people did not see the Trump win coming--life was made so miserable for anyone who did not agree with the HuffPo version of reality, they just stopped speaking, but they did vote.

To me, voting for someone who has been taken to court for not permitting minorities to rent in his buildings, has exploited foreign workers and screwed them as they built his stupid gold buildings, has bragged about sexually assaulting women, has bilked the very demographic that put him where he is now.... you may not personally consider yourself racist/xenophobic/misogynistic/pro-rape culture but how does a vote for him NOT make you complicit in pushing these attitudes forward?
As much as I see some truth in what you are saying, nothing is ever that simple and trying to make it that simple doesn't help anybody.

Well, I will also confess that I didn't vote for either of them. I voted early by mail. At the time, it seemed there was no chance trump could possibly win. So I threw my vote away on a third party candidate, whom I didn't even agree with, basically because I hate them both. I don't trust either. I didn't think either was equipped to be president.

Today I feel totally ashamed of myself and my immature decision.

I really did not think it was possible, and in the end I didn't want to feel responsible for her being in office (though I was sure she would be there). I do think that in some ways it isn't the end of America that he can appoint a justice. Scalia was ultra conservative, whoever he appoints will not destroy balance. Ginsburg just has to hang on for a few more years, and then nothing has changed. (The lady is still doing like 50 push ups a day, I think she'll hang out).

(I also have to confess that I have very little time to watch the news these days. I do have it on sometimes, but I can't pay attention... so ignore my opinion, it's really not as informed as it used to be).

And I'm sorry that I helped this happen.

No. Don't. I'm *really* trying to understand this. There is so much to choke down with this candidate. I am trying to wrap my head around it so I can look my neighbors in the eye without feeling like they see me as "other". How do rational, educated people come to terms with some of the more hateful rhetoric and endorsements that this campaign encouraged? How do you reconcile it?

I'm curious if you had to do it all over again, would you choose differently? DH and I were discussing if the election could be redone today if the results would be different. I believe they would. I think so many people (including myself) were in such denial that he could win.

It's no secret I'm a long time HRC fan and even voted for her in the 2008 primary. I'm shell shocked and spent the majority of the day in bed crying. As a Hispanic and mother of a LGBTQ daughter I am personally offended at everything Trump stands for and terrified for what the future looks like for our country.

Yes. I would absolutely have voted for her if I could do it over. It was about three weeks ago. There was no way he could win in my mind and I wanted nothing to do with either of them. The polls seemed to indicate that it wasn't close. I knew of maybe 6 trump supporters - total. I never thought he could win.

I would take it back now, no question.
