Went to dinner with a college friend last night who is in the C-Suite of a Fortune 500 with a Chinese owner. She stated that this will absolutely affect the economy if they can't get production from China because their industry is already tenuous. I think there are immediate issues and more longer term issues from this like the frailty of the economy. So wash your hands, stock up, and think about solidifying your economic postion. <straightens tin foil hat>

Okay, after going to two stores today that had zero hand sanitizer (a grocery store and an office supply store), NOW I'm a little worried. Mainly for hubby, who is surely going to be fielding an ungodly amount of "I have a tickle in my throat, you have to give me CARONAVIRUS TEST NAO." I'm also a little worried because we have a superintendent of schools whose leadership in a crisis doesn't inspire me. If we have any kids or staff test positive, I have no idea what kind of decision-making process he will use to determine a course of action (notifying families, closing schools, etc. like has been done in other Washington and Oregon districts.)
Glad I did my stocking up yesterday though. I should still be good without a grocery run for most of the week. Maybe the panic will die down a little by then.
Also, I don't know what solidifying my economic position might look like, but I'm glad to report that I'm satisfied with my existing asset allocation. I'm sleeping comfortably at night despite losses that about double the last annual wage I ever earned. We're going to check on Monday to see if it still looks like a buying opportunity, because my lazy butt has been slow to actually invest our monthly savings contributions, so they're sitting in cash and ripe for deployment. (I don't recommend market timing like this though! If you have automatic contributions that's way better, just let them ride! Consider, though, if you need to set a point where you will rebalance your holdings back to the asset allocation that's right for you. Like if you have 5% too much in bonds and 5% too little in equities, will you sell bonds and buy stocks? Or will you do it at 2% or wait for 10%? Or just wait until your usual annual rebalancing date? There's not really a wrong answer as long as it's pre-determined and carried out dispassionately.)Alison

My financial position is to buy low cost Vanguard Admiral Shares of four different broad mutual funds and stay the course. I'm trying damn hard to not look until at least April. Instead, I am soothing myself with a box of Girl Scout cookies per day. It's not a good strategy for any of my goals. In my dreams I run with the Kenyans.

How will the state of emergency impact you spotty_dog?
It's looking increasingly likely that we'll have to reschedule our Ireland trip ☹️

Since we are somewhat rural, I feel a bit protected by isolation? It's probably a false sense of security. There are other iMSN members that are a little closer to the places where cases have been confirmed. At least one high school in a neighboring county is being closed for "cleaning" because of a confirmed case. That's what leads me to wonder what my school district would do. For now we're just hanging in there!
Fortunately DH doesn't work for a week. I still feel like the rumbling unease is going to spill over into people using the emergency department a lot more in the next few days.
I have some teenagers coming over today and I'm going to make them wash their hands when they get here.Alison

The small, local health screening company I moonlight for does in-site health screening at work sites. It’s pretty cool. Immediate lipid panel, A1C and blood pressure/BMI. They just canceled the entire month of screenings for regeneron here. They are all hands on deck for research I guess. This smaller business has now lost an entire month of business. It’s starting to impact here.-Ladybug

Nothing *yet * has worried DH and his colleagues. What scares me is not COVID 19, it is the people hoarding supplies, flooding our healthcare system because they think they have it and the news. I become scared when our world traveler friend not phased by revolutions (getting shot) calls us asking if he needs to buy a mask.
Now, we are traveling out of the country next month, I am concerned about hysteria or the inconvenience of being stuck outside the country if something happens at one of the airports/countries.
Meanwhile, there is the flu ...Wish the news would report how many are dying daily. Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

I am half fascinated, half terrified. It been months since I've been around, but I thought I'd check in and see what everyone here had to say. I don't think I'd normally be so terrified, but I've got surgery scheduled in 6 weeks. I scheduled it six months ago and I don't want it to be cancelled. Mentally I need to get it over with. That and we are scheduled to travel to Florida and Texas for the next few weeks AND I'm supposed to travel to New Orleans for the surgery (only a handful of surgeons frequently do the surgery).Loving wife of neurosurgeon

DrK isn't worried. But I'm concerned for our elderly population, especially people in communal situations like his psych ward or the CCRC where my mom lives. The percentage of deaths is small but someone said to me today that "if all our parents die from this it's going to be a very big deal."

There was a case confirmed in Melk. The kids were informed that if there is a case confirmed in the school, they will all be quarantined there. They are also supposed to travel to Ireland in two weeks. There is a chance the trip will be cancelled.

DH’s hospital just canceled all biz related travel so I guess he’s not going to his upcoming conference.

Yeah, hubby has gotten two conferences canceled for this month and for May, and he'd already bought plane tickets for one.
As for how *I* am doing...I'm so far from a germaphobe you don't even know. I almost never use disinfectant cleaners at home, I'm a big believer in soap and water and agitation and immune systems. But this thing has me SHOOK. I've got a very strict handwashing protocol implemented, I'm using ALL the Lysol, and I'm eyeing crowds of people with paranoid distrust. It's very upsetting to me that my tiny town is hosting a gathering of 10,000 people, the majority of whom are coming from the Seattle area. Go home! (But our small businesses live or die on the income from this festival, so...)
Today my son was supposed to have four other boys over. We were all really looking forward to it, although I was strongly considering a run to the store to pick up more Lysol. But...four hours before they were to arrive, a mom gave me the heads-up that her kid has a cough. Well, I double-checked with hubby to make sure I wasn't overreacting, but he agreed. "No, it's not okay to have a sick kid come over." Again, this is SO not me! When we'd have toddler playdates, I'd be so confused when a parent would tell me their kid had a runny nose. My attitude was, "If you stay home for every runny nose you'll never leave the house!" But now, I just feel almost compulsive about controlling germ vectors...said kid was at a busy garden show in Seattle 7 days ago, too. My DS is really, really bummed that we canceled the whole get-together, but losing the kid with the cough also means losing the kid he's spent the last 48 hours with, and we can't go forward with just 2/4 participants. Sigh.
I think I'm still fine to send my kids to school, because they don't have THAT much opportunity to be in each other's faces, and I have handwashing protocols drilled into them. But dang I'm ready to know a lot more about this stupid germ.Alison

I am amazed by how royally they screwed up testing. I just assume it's far more widespread than we think.
We haven't changed our travel plans for May and won't unless there are restrictions in place.
DH says he just wants to get it already since he will inevitably be dealing with these patients in the ICU. And he could use a couple of weeks off.
