Actually there's a new book out that looks at all of our 'involvement' in various parts of the world over time and basically our meddling has had lots of unintended consequences.
1) Hawaii and Puerto Rico- used to be essentially self-sufficient islands.
2) Phillipines- Huge increase in militant Islam partially due to the hideous state of poverty which was in part created by our occupancy and later propping up Marcos.
3) Somalia- We actually have been funneling funds to the warloads (the same ones that shot down our plane during the Clinton era) and lo and behold, the Militant Islamists have now been put in charge and the people are kinda happhy about (a al the Taliban, some order is better than none)
4) Iran- DID have a democratically elected president in the 1950s that we deposed and propped back up the Shah and we all know what happened from then on to today.
5) Iraq- Of course we all know that at one time we supported our buddy Saddam because he was against our former pals in Iran.
It's kind of like our farm policies and business practices. We need to practice what we preach. If we REALLY are a capitalist society, then we need to let farmers grow what they can get paid for, NOT pay them for not growing anything. IF we really are a democracy, then we need to respect the decisions made by other democracies, EVEN IF we disagree.
How much longer will it be until Sally and I take over?
