Actually there's a new book out that looks at all of our 'involvement' in various parts of the world over time and basically our meddling has had lots of unintended consequences.

    1) Hawaii and Puerto Rico- used to be essentially self-sufficient islands.

    2) Phillipines- Huge increase in militant Islam partially due to the hideous state of poverty which was in part created by our occupancy and later propping up Marcos.

    3) Somalia- We actually have been funneling funds to the warloads (the same ones that shot down our plane during the Clinton era) and lo and behold, the Militant Islamists have now been put in charge and the people are kinda happhy about (a al the Taliban, some order is better than none)

    4) Iran- DID have a democratically elected president in the 1950s that we deposed and propped back up the Shah and we all know what happened from then on to today.

    5) Iraq- Of course we all know that at one time we supported our buddy Saddam because he was against our former pals in Iran.

It's kind of like our farm policies and business practices. We need to practice what we preach. If we REALLY are a capitalist society, then we need to let farmers grow what they can get paid for, NOT pay them for not growing anything. IF we really are a democracy, then we need to respect the decisions made by other democracies, EVEN IF we disagree.

How much longer will it be until Sally and I take over?

Admittedly, heidi, I have often thought the same thing. The US has been involved in some uprisings like this (think S. America) but...why not just take care of it the *easy* way. I think it breaks some international law (see how informed I am ) though.
Yes, I am pretty sure that it does break international law, but no one has to know it was the Seals or Rangers or CIA that took out bad evil man 1 or 2. Besides, our favorite Prez doesn't seem to have that big of a problem with going to war or killing thousands of people, not to metion all the other liberties and laws he ignores...wire tapping anyone?

      I'm just saying...

It is atrocious what the US does to cause these problems. There have to be civil, peaceful, nonbomb toting ways of deplomacy through the use of our finances and humanitarian aid that can bring about a positive change without all this. I'm not saying war is never warranted, but I think the US jumps in with both feet far too quickly. The US has been involved in a major war far too often.

      Revolutionary War 1775-1783
      War of 1812 1812-1815
      Indian Wars approx. 1817-1898
      Mexican War 1846-1848
      Civil War 1861-1865
      Spanish-American War 1898-1902
      World War I 1917-1918
      World War II 1940-1945
      Korean War 1950-1953
      Vietnam War 1964-1975
      Gulf War 1990-1991

That's a lot of years in our history that we have been at war with ourselves or someone else.
