Do you mean that you can tell the difference between the kit lens and a 50 mm prime? Well, of course you can. It has a much wider aperture than the kit lens. A comparable zoom lens would break the bank, but I suppose there are compromises. For indoor kid and baby shots, I'd consider focusing my efforts on lighting. A good external flash can do wonders.

As for Vishenka's needs, 10 mm might be good, although a bit distorted. I'd check with Stella. She used to do architectural shots for her mom who's a Realtor.

Right. I just meant I wasn't arguing that the kit lens was as good - it's obviously not. But when the choice is to get the shots or not, I go with the kit lens for now. So my point was that if you are also using the camera as your primary and can't afford a better lens with that kind of range, it might be worth getting the kit lens.

I do love my 50mm for anything I'm wanting to keep for posterity.

I'll tiptoe in as well (this is totally unrelated to what Vishenka needs). I also use my kit lens. I was so paralyzed by all the choices that I got that for the extra 100 bucks. I figure I'll learn on this, and when I know what I want/need, I won't cry about spending a ton on a lens.

I use mine, too, and I have other lenses. I like my other lenses when I'm specifically shooting something that calls for X lens ... but if I'm just trying to shoot pics of my kids on the go, chances are I can't run up to them and catch them for the awesome shot w/the 50mm.

same, I have a macro lens I use for shooting my letterpress stuff, and one telephoto we got for our last vacation, but our camera bag is too small to bring everything everywhere and 90% of the time I'm too lazy anyway

Vishenka, I could totally see you incorporating your international travels w/ your decorating. I read/ follow Goop. I really like how she incorporates her travels & provides link or info on purchasing things for your home. I could see you having a site like hers sans the movie star aspect.

It looks like I can't use "shop, style, live." So I was thinking of a new tagline. What do you guys think about "our design, your home"?
