  • Running shoes

I can't not decided. They have so many. I will be running and training for a 1/2 marathon and need new shoes. I am not sure if I should go for the lightweight kind or what.... I need the imsn fountain of knowledge!!

I would go to a running store and get their help. I have a lot of friends who have been pleasantly surprised by the recs they've gotten from experts. Everyone has their brand, but only you know how they will feel on your feet!

Definitely go get fit by the pros at a running store. Makes a HUGE difference. Huge. Unbelievably huge.

I have seriously fucked up feet and thought I couldn't run/walk more than a mile or two sans surgery until I was fit by the running/walking shoes store pros.

I agree with the others, go to a good running store. They will watch you run on a test track to see if you pronate, supinate, etc. Then they will recommend a good shoe for you. I ran for years in shoes that were an entire size too small, which caused problems. Being properly fitted is crucial to minimize injuries.

What is a good running store? I've heard that advice lots of times and have no idea where to go.

Another plug for a running store. I think Luke's locker is a store with non Texas locations. My favorite, Run On is Texas only.

A good running store will be a small store with maybe a few locations in the area but will not be a major chain. You want a store staffed by actual runners as employees, not random high schoolers.

They should put you in several pairs and watch you run after assessing your gait barefoot.

They are usually independently owned. Ours is Running Wild I would google it!

Portland's best are Fit Right NW and Portland Running Co. Both are locally owned and staffed by runners.

                        Warning, crunchy chick weighing in...

I'm training with minimalist shoes right now and will go back to full on barefoot after the street cleaners come through. Fixed my foot issues but it does take a long ass time to transition if you're used to standard athletic shoes. I will never go back.

I know some barefoot runners. One was doing really great until she hit a patch of acorns on a sidewalk. Ouch! Twisted her ankle and couldn't run for a week. My right ankle twists when I try to run barefoot.

A good friend of mine runs in Vibrams and she says that it's a tougher workout on her calves and significantly changes her stride, but she likes it.
