Are your old lenses for systems other than Canon or Nikon? If I recall correctly, Canon and Nikon don't offer IS in-body but I believe some of the others do or did (Sony, Olympus, maybe Panasonic).

They are for an old Canon that my husband used to use. One of the old original, non digital Rebel's.

Niener, that sounds awesome! It'll probably be another year or two before I can justify another P&S, so maybe they'll have worked out any kinks by then!

Do the mirror less act like the point and shoots or do you have to learn all the settings, shutters, etc? That is another reason I have hesitated on the DSLR because I don't feel like I have time to learn how to use it.

We just bought a micro 4/3 camera, and I'd say it's right in between P&S and DSLR; it's in-between in size; you DO need a lens on it, like a DSLR, but they make "pancake" lenses that aren't bulky. There ARE a lot of settings you can play with, but there's also an "auto" mode. This site might be a place to start (note that it has 4/3 AND micro-4/3): http://www.four-thirds.org/en/index.html

Embarassingly, I don't actually know/remember. DH did the research and bought it; as I recall, amazon was having a bundle deal; he got the body and "comes with" lens AND another lens for a decent discount. I know it's one of the panasonic lumix ones, but don't remember which model exactly.

I'm at BB they only have the Song NEX-3N in store, it's really cool! May have to convince DH to get my Christmas present early!

I'm going to further explore P&S in the next year so I can't wait to hear more about your experience with the micro 4/3 poky!

I hope to have some time to play with it in the next few months. The first REAL workout it will get will be our Europe trip in the spring. Will definitely have an opinion by then!

So then the salesman (who said more then enough he wasn't on commission) tried to convince me on the Canon SX50 which is a point and shoot that looks like a mini DSLR. I don't know - I hate making decisions like this because it is a lot of money but we can keep a good one for many years. UGH!

Remember that the sales people at BB typically know very little about the products they are selling. Go in knowing what you want after you do the research. DS17 follows camera reviews and equipment (he saved for a long time for I the Canon 5D). I'll find out what sites he likes best. I know a lot of stuff on YouTube is helpful.
