We had real ones until we were required to have a fake one campus for med. school. Now I love fake. It's perfectly shaped and easy to deal with.

We've mostly done fake because of savings but I do admire the real ones. Though part of me is a tree hugger and feels like it's unnecessary tree murder. Plus when the tree starts drying towards the end all the needles start falling out and they're difficult to vacuum or sweep up.

It's one of my crunchy things, but we cut down one from a local tree farm. Yeah that means I don't get a frasier fir or any of the other good smelling trees. But I feel like I'm helping a local family an not contributing to the shipping pollution. I also recycle it each year. In Louisiana they went to fortify the marshes. I think the one I sent last year went to be sunk for natural habitats in freshwater areas.

I prefer fake. Growing up we usually did fake but sometimes got a real one.

I think I would do real if we could go to a tree farm and make it an experience. They have them here but it feels so very wrong to go cut down a tree in 75 degree balmy weather

So I ended up going with a fake tree. I couldn't quite justify the fact that getting a live tree and stand would cost about the same amount as a fake tree. The topper is made from some ribbon that I picked up a few years ago on clearance for $0.74. While I prefer a big fat tree, this skinny tree fits the space perfectly. And the best part is that I didn't have to purchase any more ornaments to fill it up. After the divorce, E and split the ornaments, fairly evenly.

And Caleb's favorite part is that he got to hang his Darth Siddeous ornament front and center on the tree. *facedesk*

                Real all the way!

Now I might need to buy a baby-proofing fence this year but I love real trees and so does DH!

I was reading about what people did to "baby-proof" their tree - one family wrapped heavier boxes in paper/bow/ribbon and placed them around the tree I have one friend who just stuck a fence around it! We are just using "unbreakable" ornaments - we'll see how it goes...

I remember a few years of my parents putting the Christmas tree in a playpen...

We have a prelit fake tree at the moment. We're never home on Christmas anyway, so the real just seems like too much work. (Last year we didn't even put ornaments out - the prelit tree in the window adds a lot of ambiance on its own!) Plus DH and I have a bit of a disagreement about real tree provenance - he thinks it only counts if you go cut it yourself, but I've always been perfectly satisfied with tree lots.

N hasn't showed any interest in the tree yet...

My 2.5 year old has had the time of her life laying under the tree gazing up at the lights. Last year, with the real tree, she removed all ornaments and lights within reach. We only use the big, glittery, cheapo ornaments for the time being. We'll decorate this weekend, I'm sure she'll rearrange them.

A has only taken the dangling ones off the bottom - she was more interested in all the boxes that came up from the basement. Now, the ribbon might be another issue...talk to me tomorrow
