We just got back from the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts and our priest had already inserted Francis into the list of church leaders we pray for. I was wondering if he would do that or if we had to wait until his official installment.

I was super excited, but I'm Catholic. I'm so surprised that non-Catholics were excited about it too, but it's nice. I was watching on the Spanish channel they were waiting on the Argentine president's statement but she seemed to be tweeting about everything except that. Then when it finally came later, they called it austere and I can't remember what else. Seems he had been feuding with the govt there. I'm watching the address to the College of Cardinals. One of my professors had been talking about it a lot because she did her thesis in Rome, can't wait for the next lecture. Que Dios lo bendiga y que viva el Papa!

They said he spoke off the cuff several times which can be a nightmare for translators. He kissed the hand of a very young cardinal and one gave him what looks like the livestrong bracelets which he put on immediately. His greeting of each cardinal is very warm and takes his time speaking to each one.

I'm thrilled that he took the name Francis. It's so countercultural, and it's exactly what we need. It's amazing to think that the seat of Peter has been filled by a new world that wasn't even know during the time of Christ's life! The spread and longetivity of the faith in spite of so many generations and changes is truly remarkable and humbling.-Ladybug
