I said f*ck NYE last night and took a long hot shower, not realizing it was past midnight when I got out! Our family always gets together for New Year's Day and we start the day off watching the parade. I have no resolutions because honestly, I've become cynical enough where it's just another day. Same old bills, same old problems, nothing's changed except it'll take me a couple of weeks to write 2014 on checks. I have to fake being happy and nice for other people so they don't bother me. Yes, I'm a bitter, bitter hag.

I had a new year's I'd like to become my tradition. Friends offered to babysit (!); hubs was working, so I met up with dear friends at a lovely bar for a glass of champagne. Was supposed to go with them to see a live-band-led karaoke celebration of Prince's Purple Rain (awesome), but instead snuck home to read and think and have a quiet glass of champagne. Went to bed. Woke up, had a quick cookie for breakfast (whee!), and swam 4 (!) miles with a great group of people -- that's about 1.5 miles farther the I've ever swum or tried to swim before. Felt great to have some quiet time on NYE followed by doing something that physically pushed me past my comfort zone on NY Day. (i'm not an athlete and swimming 4 miles is a hot dayum big deal for me. Still giddy about that.) Saw the hubs for a few hours on NY Day, played with the kids, made a big old pot of good soup, talked to some far-flung friends, and felt absolutely content.
