My soon-to-be DH met 13 years before we started to date. Him being 5 years older then me made it kind of impossible for us to date before we did.
But our families swam for the same summer swim team and he always got the great job of handing out the clerk of course cards (which is what my mom always did as well), with him being the oldest of 5 kids he was past the summer swim team age long before his youngest sibling was. So whenever I would go by my mom before i would swim he would always be there and we would just talk.
Then summer before 7th grade he showed up at my ballet school to play piano for our classes for the summer. He would go out with all the girls from the school (pimp style haha) for ice cream, bowling, movie, etc...
Then him and I always kept in touch from then on, mostly through emails but whenever I had boy drama (haha) he was always the person I would call. We would also try and meet up once or twice a year when he would come home from college for something very informal (normally bowling).
This past winter (October 2005) my dad was diagnosed with lymphoma and naturally my now fiance was the first person i called to talk about it with (being in medicine i knew he would be able to put everything in "normal people" terms). He suggested lunch at the hospital (it was only 15 minutes away from my school) and when i saw him in his white coat all dressed up i finally realized what had always been right in front of me.
after that we were still just friends for a couple more months until i finally broke the bubble and asked him what he thought about the idea of dating. and from there the rest is history...sigh haha im a dork
