The fact that so many names go through cylcles of popularity can be a problem. If every other person has your name, it lacks the uniquenss your parents were are striving for (Jennifer's case in point). I would go with an uncommon, yet recognizable name for that reason. We all usually have to spell out our last names, so it's nice if you don't have to do that with your first name too. That said, I thought that by picking Natalie and Grace, that I was picking those sorts of names. I later realized (after a month or so) that they were both in the top 100 names used, Grace being in the top 25. Oh well...

What about "Naomi"? I remember we were thinking of "Naomi" and "Sonja" for our twins, until my sister Sonja said she didn't want one named after her. I haven't heard of anyone using "Rose", "Anne", or "Barbara" lately.

Jenn, I love the names you thought of. It is so neat when you can incorporate family names the way you have thought of doing.

I nearly flipped and hit the ceiling when you suggested Francesca!!!!!!!!! My best friend from childhood is named Francesca. Then her middle name is Palmer, after her father. Her nickname is Fanny, which was her grandmother's name. You might think that she was teased about this name, but she NEVER was. She is gorgeous, and the boys were falling all over her, so nobody ever teased her. Fanny was a common name way back when. She still goes by Fanny, except when she is being a corporate lawyer (then it's Francesca). Her sisters has a great names too: Samantha Conseulo (we call her Sam); and Melanie Jessamine (we call her Mel).

But I am hopelessly biased. She picked unusual names for her three daughters as well: Clara, Maud, and Honor.

Isn't it fun to pick out names? I remember loving that stage.

Thanks all for the great suggestions. I have written them down in my book I am keeping so I can talk with my husband about his picks. I also like the idea of going through the alphabet and picking out one favorite name from each letter. How clever. Only 4 more weeks to go. I can't believe how fast this has gone. Here's one more name for you all to provide input about:

Francesca (Francie or Frankie for short)

I'm not sure if I like it or not. I keep going back and forth on it. Gregg's grandfather's name was Frank and so it could be sort of a family name. I don't know...what do you all think?

I think Francesca is a pretty name. Friends of ours named their daughter that, but I am not sure what they call her.

I really wanted to see what my husband would choose so I had him use our baby name book and pick 20 of his favorite names and I did the same. Then we compared notes and were able to throw out names off of each other's list and finally came up with names we could agree on together. It was fun. We had a hard time choosing one name for our daughter because we each had a name we liked.

We didn't settle on Avery Elizabeth (my first choice!) until after we saw her for the first time. Now my husband says we have to use his first choice, Madelyn Grace, to name our next daughter. I have lots of time to work on him!

Have fun with the name game!
