  • post 45,231 on Girls' clothing.

I know that we've talked about this in the past, but I keep coming up against the lack of reasonable girls' clothing for the late elementary school set. Sure, my daughter wears hoodies, jeans, and leggings, aka American casual wear. For the most part, I try to go basic. Now that she can't fit into Gymboree anymore, I have even purchased an occasional item from Justice. Frankly that store is so visually overwhelming that I feel like an an epileptic seizure is surely going to come on. It's *alright* for a hoodie or a pair of jeans, but overall I'm just meh. It's just adult clothing cut down to girls sizes with lots of sequins. So not impressed.

At 9 and in the fourth grade, she wears a size 12. While she is squarely in the "girl" mentality ("No mom, I don't want to shop for clothes, let's go to the Disney store!"), the next clothing size coming up for her is juniors. Yeah. Don't even get me started on what I have found in THAT department. Even if I would capitulate to some of these looks, her Daddy would have a coronary. Besides, thankfully she's not pressing the envelope to be that older girl yet. (I know it will come, but I don't want to lead the way). Tonight's outing to the mall resulted in the purchase of a single sweater, a plain light turquoise blue sweater (with no visible branding) size extra small from Aeropostale. Honestly if the clothes that I find aren't skanky, they just aren't cute. I refuse to pay top dollar for "meh".

The only clothes that look remotely decent (again, I'm not asking that she prance around in smocked dresses everyday) are from uber expensive places like Chasing fireflies.

I'm half contemplating these two purchases for our upcoming cruise and then church in the summer (with a little white cardigan):

    or

You know, because I *need* to spend close to $100 to outfit my daughter in cute, age appropriate clothes. Beyond Ridic. I kind of get why there is a whole segment of older elementary school girls rocking the jock look. It's not that they necessarily want to wear lounge wear all the time, its just that mom and dad won't buy the alternative.

Maybe this can be our collective million dollar business idea. Where is this age group's clothing? I have had too many conversations with other moms to know that I'm the only one. They are beyond rainbow and unicorns, and yet they're not ready for that edgier look. LillySayWhat? Vishenka? Anyone?

I wore almost all Limited Too until I went to high school, but I don't know what their clothes are like these days. What about Gap and Old Navy? Or J. Crew when they go on sale (or the outlet)?

I was going to suggest ON or Gap as well. Forever 21 also seems to have a lot of fun, funky clothes that aren't skanky - but it can also be seizure-inducing in there

Actually, I googled what to do when daughter outgrows Gymboree. I am concurrently browsing JCrew for kids, "Crewcuts". I like what I see, but I am too cheap to justify spending that type of money on a nine year old's clothes. Seriously, people, this is an unmet need. Who's going to build this business of moderately priced (i.e. between Walmart and Specialty priced stores) clothing for upper elementary school kids? It's yours for the taking.

I think that this whole 9 is the new 16 thing is sad and disgusting, TBH.

ETA: Limitedtoo immediately converts to the justice website? Merger maybe?

Have you tried Macy's or Nordstrom Rack for her? Their sales on kids' clothes can be pretty great. Also, Target used to have decent options when our girls were in that stage.

We had a horrible time finding appropriate clothing for our girls because of their shapes. One is very thin, so everything that fits her waist is WAY too short. The other has had an hourglass figure forever, so anything that is in anyway fitted looks inappropriate, even when to isn't.

Kohl's has something decent in junior now and then. Dillard's juniors department is ok now and then as well. Gap, Old Navy, Target. It's hit and miss and lots of shopping to find the right things.

I have no advice, but am following as I know this is an issue for us down the road. By the way, I googled Limited Too, and a few results down there was a link to TweenBrands, which says that the tween years are the ages of 7 to 12. 7? Really!? My daughter is 2.5 years away from being a tween? Just two years ago, she was in diapers!!!!! That's just crazy talk.

Limited Too is now Justice. I absolutely refuse to go in that store and told the DDs that it will never be happening. It's SO FREAKING BRIGHT in there! I loooove CrewCuts. I'm on the Factory and outlets mailing list so when they're having a good sale, I'm there. We also shop Gap and ON, but it's hit or miss. Janie and Jack goes up to 12, though I don't know if that's her style.

Those dresses you posted are cute! But yeah, it's ridiculously hard to find age appropriate stuff.

What about ps by aero? Less ugly compared to justice - I get a lot for my 11 yo baby sister there. She used to love justice and now it is "so over " lol.

Justice actually has some really cute clothes and great jeans and jeggings. You just need to go in there armed with sizes and take time putting together outfits. Oh, their yoga pants are great as well as their sweats. Seriously, don't pass them up. Nordstrom also has quality items. I find ON to be hit or miss and their quality to be lacking for girls products. Lands End has good stuff as well as Hannah Andersson. Dd19 never went for clothing from the juniors dept. She was more Gap, Loft, Target kinda girl.

Oh, and yes, Justice is LimitedToo. They had a name change about 5 years ago.

Kelly, what clothes are specifically concerning to you? Honestly, I wouldn't worry, your daughter has a good head on her shoulders and will make good choices. I do think it's important to get out of the way and let your kids experiment with fashion and discover what they like to wear not what mom wants them to wear. Of course you can't really do this until they show an interest but it will happen overnight.

I just bought dresses for my SIL who is in that age range for Christmas--Gap had what I'm looking for. They are still pricy to me, but if you look online and be careful when you shop, they are ALWAYS having a sale.

Here are some outfits dd11 has from Justice. Simple and fun. Yes, the store can be bright and overcrowded but the quality beats ON hands down and their stuff is not so meh. Plus you can always hit a 40% off sale. I'm not a Justice devotee but I hate to see moms scared away from them because there really is great options and good quality to be had plus it's a fun store to let your daughter put separates together while you stand back and watch.

I wish my dd12 still fit in justice...

I don't mind NOT going to the store, but I am nostalgic for the clothes. They are cheerful and bright and fun... And generally not indecent. Justice was the only store where I found shorts long enough for her school dress code. And now she's outgrown justice so idk what I'm going to do... And they have real tank tops at justice with 2" bands, and not just Camis.

                            Sigh.

Not a huge fan of forever 21 but we've found a few things. And sometimes H&M has decent stuff. Department stores are ok too usually-- just can be overly themed with all the VeryCoolSeeMyBoyfried type of nonsense.

I love j. crew for shorts, and at some point during the year they always have a good sale on them, at least at the outlet. They sell them in several lengths.
