I know that we've talked about this in the past, but I keep coming up against the lack of reasonable girls' clothing for the late elementary school set. Sure, my daughter wears hoodies, jeans, and leggings, aka American casual wear. For the most part, I try to go basic. Now that she can't fit into Gymboree anymore, I have even purchased an occasional item from Justice. Frankly that store is so visually overwhelming that I feel like an an epileptic seizure is surely going to come on. It's *alright* for a hoodie or a pair of jeans, but overall I'm just meh. It's just adult clothing cut down to girls sizes with lots of sequins. So not impressed.
At 9 and in the fourth grade, she wears a size 12. While she is squarely in the "girl" mentality ("No mom, I don't want to shop for clothes, let's go to the Disney store!"), the next clothing size coming up for her is juniors. Yeah. Don't even get me started on what I have found in THAT department. Even if I would capitulate to some of these looks, her Daddy would have a coronary. Besides, thankfully she's not pressing the envelope to be that older girl yet. (I know it will come, but I don't want to lead the way). Tonight's outing to the mall resulted in the purchase of a single sweater, a plain light turquoise blue sweater (with no visible branding) size extra small from Aeropostale. Honestly if the clothes that I find aren't skanky, they just aren't cute. I refuse to pay top dollar for "meh".
The only clothes that look remotely decent (again, I'm not asking that she prance around in smocked dresses everyday) are from uber expensive places like Chasing fireflies.
I'm half contemplating these two purchases for our upcoming cruise and then church in the summer (with a little white cardigan):

You know, because I *need* to spend close to $100 to outfit my daughter in cute, age appropriate clothes. Beyond Ridic. I kind of get why there is a whole segment of older elementary school girls rocking the jock look. It's not that they necessarily want to wear lounge wear all the time, its just that mom and dad won't buy the alternative.
Maybe this can be our collective million dollar business idea. Where is this age group's clothing? I have had too many conversations with other moms to know that I'm the only one. They are beyond rainbow and unicorns, and yet they're not ready for that edgier look. LillySayWhat? Vishenka? Anyone?
