• I attached my FB to my shoe on the treadmill today and it said I ran 2.67 miles, but the treadmill said 3 miles. Not sure what to make of the discrepancy. Tomorrow I'm planning to do the same routine with the FB on my wrist to see what it says.

There's a bit of imprecision built in to the system because the Fitbit has to make assumptions about your stride length to be able to translate steps into distance. It has two stride lengths it chooses between, based on whether it thinks you're running or walking. Having a wrist unit on your foot might throw that off, or maybe it incorrectly extrapolates from your height to your stride, or maybe your stride length changes more than that. Basically you kinda need to take it all with a grain of salt. Being off by 10% isn't so terrible?

That makes sense about the strides. But if it's always 10 to 15% off when I'm wearing it on my shoe, that's frustrating. I wear it on my shoe A LOT because I'm usually pushing a stroller or carrying someone on my hip. Plus, I'm in a fierce battle with my parents and every step counts! 😜

            • Oh, I'd guess the steps are accurate! My assumption would be that it thinks you're taking choppier littler steps than you are? That would explain the distance being short.

Have you ever compared that to manually entering the time in Activities? I'd be curious what you came up with. For instance, when I get steps from practicing I enter "driving" for however long and it completely deletes whatever steps I'd acquired.

Of course after all these travels the last two weeks I get sick. I've missed so much work there's no way I can take a day (and I work 7 days a week). So I'm not even going to try to make 10k steps until I start feeling better.

                • Oh, I'll try that and see what it comes up with MAPPLEBUM.

                  • Yeah, that's a good suggestion. For some reason "Walk 3.5 mph for 30 minutes" as a manual entry usually gives me a different step count than the actually recorded steps!

                    • I think I'm gonna quit this week's challenge too. I came home early because I feel so shitty plus this impending "storm" which was snow/sleet an hour north but rain by the lake. Whatever. This is the downside of working 7 days a week and peace'ing out in the middle of the semester. I have very little wiggle room to stay home and rest.

                        • Husband: Gets up at 6:30. Goes to a meeting from 7-9. Heads out on his bike in 39 degree weather for a 90-minute ride. Will then eat lunch and get ready to walk a mile to work for a 12-11 work shift.

Me: Rolls out of bed at 7:10 with intent to kick the cat who's meowing for her breakfast. Gets kids off to school and does a few chores and contemplates *maybe* going for a walk. Once it warms up above 40 degrees. >.< (Managed 40 minutes, now to shower and make lunch and such...)

                                Any luck?

I have a gross head cold, but it's gorgeous out. I'm going to try to squeak in a 45-60 minute walk before I go to the grocery store and work in the garden...
