I think it's fair for a resident to say "I'm not sure I can do an intubation safely with this gear on a hemorrhagic patient" Like the CDC director said "there can be no room for error on these patients" Residents always have room for error, that is why they work under supervision. These patients need the best care possible.
That is one of the reason why the attenings do not want the residents involved BUT that is not the reason these residents gave. Granted I was not there, but it is my understanding that their reasoning was more concern about themselves than their patients' (or containment). This is why the attendings wanted to be very clear regarding why the descision was made.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

I don't know about Pandemic, but part of why we moved to an island was so that in case of zombies we can take out the bridge and ferries and be pretty safe up in here.

Ahh, I see what you mean. I can see why they wanted to clarify.

              • So we just got all the emails with the hospital plans for treatment should patients come in. We also got the email that a number of nurses from my DH's hospital were on the plane heading to a nursing conference. They've all been sent home on paid leave for the incubation period.

DH is reviewing CDC information and hospital sent protocols.

In talking, he feels more confident since these are basically very similar to what every surgeon does in the OR every day.

                • Apparently, nurse 2 said she'd called the CDC directly before flying because she felt ill and had a low grade fever (99.5) and they gave her the green light to fly. Seems like someone should be checking those phone records... yikes.

                  • Just heard that. Wow. The guy on TV said that they just have phone clerks that look up stats on a computer and based on a protocol say yes or no. If that's so, wow. You'd think they'd assign a case worker to these people being monitored, not give out some hotline. Wow.

                    • Did someone earlier post that she'd been told prior to that call to not travel or to quarantine herself?

                      • The huffington post reported earlier that the original 76 were asked not to travel on commercial airlines.

Right now it's so she said-he said. We'll see how it all shakes out. And you know, there's the media who won't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

                          • God I'm so cynical. Of course my first thought is: "I'm sure she was told not to travel and still traveled even though she knew it was against instruction/just a bad idea in general. Why would she let the good of the public get in the way of something she wanted to do?" SO CYNICAL.

I read that she was wedding planning. I can't remember where - either cnn or the huffington post I think.
