  • Phobias - got any?

I know it is stupid but I have a snake phobia. Yesterday, after a huuuuge rain, there was one sunning itself in my backyard. First thought, I do not want to f-ing ever go to my backyard again. I know that is not going to happen. Eventually, I will have to venture out. However, I am kind of annoyed that when I mentioned it to friends they blew me off and continued to talk snake types and horror stories. Really? I told one friend that I would never make him climb up anything he is not comfortable with and the other I reminder that I have killed her little spider and roach. I have no issues with being stuck in a small chamber, heights, jumping in the ocean (diving), tarantulas, roaches, lizards, frogs, etc. I know my fear of snakes is not rational...hence, it is a PHOBIA. What part of phobia do people not understand? I had dreams about their awful stories. Uggghh. This is not the first time. I get the feeling that if you do not have the usuals (heights, water, spiders, MRI machines ) then your fear is not taken seriously.

Do you have any non "mainstream" phobias?
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

I don't know. I think snakes is pretty mainstream. I'm highly afraid of rodents. I'm irrationally phobic of them. I don't like driving over high bridges. My other heights fear is pretty specific to high buildings that are open to the air - close to the edge.

I'm a freak about heights. Seriously. I don't even like dh walking with the kids next to the mall balcony. Cuz you know, at any second the railing could fall away and the concrete collapse.. See, freak.

My grandmother couldn't even see a plastic snake, it would upset her so badly. She was as tough as nails until a snake showed up, even on TV.

Flying. It's not fun. I did therapy before our last trip that absolutely required it. The phobia strength is definitely linked to my overall anxiety level, though. I tried hard to be zen and then did mind exercises on the flight. You can get over them apparently, but you need positive associations instead if negative loops. I don't think the snake thing is worth all that!

I don't think it's quite a phobia because I *can* make myself do it, but I don't like to walk on top of those sidewalk grates. I have a (completely unfounded - hence, irrational) fear of it collapsing and me falling through it. I'll go out of my way to walk around them and avoid having to walk on them but if there's no other choice (crowded, busy, whatever) then I can do it but I feel nervous the whole time.

I hate walking on sidewalk grates too! You are not alone in that. It's not full-blown phobia at all, I can definitely do it, but I hate to. It gives me anxiety. I don't even think it's weird that I walk around them, but it drives DH bonkers. Otherwise just heights, but again, since I can drive or walk over bridges I guess it's not full-blown phobia, just anxiety.

This is me! I'm not scared of them, but I overly cautious.

I'm not sure if I would call it a phobia, but I hate wasps. I will go out of my way to find something to spray at/swat them with.

I dislike many of these too, but wouldn't say they are phobias. Flying isn't my favorite, I avoid sidewalk grates, I wouldn't be thrilled if I saw a snake but nothing that invokes a gag reflex.

The thing I would say that's closest to a phobia is my feelings towards cockroaches (and if you're in the south they try to tell you they are "palmetto bugs" but this is complete bullshit, they are roaches I don't care what you say). We'd come across one every once in a while in NC...but then we moved to VA and a new terror was introduced. I had never seen one of these before living here and it haunts me to this day. Warning: I DO NOT SUGGEST YOU GOOGLE THE FOLLOWING PHRASE - house centipede.

I saw one in our kitchen shortly after moving in and was horrified. Like, burst into tears spontaneously horrified. I grabbed the vacuum to hopefully do away with it but it was gone as quickly as it had appeared. I was so upset that I left the house for 8 hours and just hung out in the local library. It was so upsetting, it haunted me for days and days (like I wouldn't go in the kitchen) and still bothers me when I think about it. Ugh.

Heh. I was startled the first time I saw one of those, too. They eat all sorts of nasty insects, though, and generally only come out at night, and like cool damp habitats, and aren't considered harmful to humans. I let them be.

DH knows that if a rodent gets in our house, he'll find a text from me with my room number at the Four Seasons.

I also really, really hate wasps (or tracker jackers. I swear to Gawd the one that got me on my foot was a for realz, out of the novel, in the flesh, tracker jacker. Pain like you wouldn't believe, hallucinations, wanted to cut my massively swollen foot off. I almost died, ya'll.)

I think I have a left-hand turn while driving phobia. I will often go out of my way to make a left hand turn at a light if possible, especially if it involves pulling out into traffic (having to look both ways) rather than turning out of traffic (only having to worry about crossing the one lane).

This is me! I used to throw a magazine/book across the room if I came across a snake picture. If was a knee jerk reaction...totally embarrassing at times. I have even asked my mom if I ever had a bad experience that I blocked out and she said no. Now, she has had bad experiences and hates them. This is where I think I get my fears from but she also is fearful of driving in the rain and although I do not like it, it does not stop me from running my usual errands.
