  • Have you ever rented a dumpster

    and are we crazy?

I'm sick of all of the junk we have in this house. Fed. Up.

I started cleaning out the garage this weekend and came up with so much garbage to throw away that it will cost us $200 in a large garbage pick-up to get rid of it (old rotting door, broken saw, broken bike trailer, etc).

This got us thinking to Amanda's broken bed, Andrew's broken desk, the carpet in the living room that the cats have scratched beyond belief ... the living room table, the crap stuffed into our storage area under the stairs etc etc.

We have a lot of junk here that we've been holding on to in part because we haven't known how to get rid of it other than put it out with our garbage and pay for a large garbage pick up.

I told dh that I want to rent a garbage dumpsters and then just get rid of all of it.

My idea? Go through each and every room of the house and purge the crap.

He's kind of on board after seeing my garbage piles after cleaning out the garage.

It would cost us $750 for 14 days ... but the alternative is to put this stuff out on the curb and pay the fees directly at that time.

Has anyone here ever done anything like this? I feel kind of silly ... and yet at the same time ... bring it.

Have you ever rented a dumpster

Yup. We've rented them before. Totally worth it.

My mom has always been a borderline hoarder and she'd rent a dumpster every few years to dun out the house.

I've only done it as an adult once when we remodeled a bathroom and needed it for the demolition debris. Worth every penny.

I am literally walking into rooms mentally picking objects to toss. I want this place cleared out.

The other alternative is to call 1-800 got junk and see how much they would charge you to pick it all up. Would be worth having them quote it anyway; might be less than the dumpster, and would definitely be less effort (they'll haul it all to their truck): http://www.1800gotjunk.com/us_en/wha...hat_we_do.aspx

The other benefit is that they recycle what they can, too. They charge by volume; we used them before we moved here; it was a big pile of stuff, and I think it was a couple hundred.

Do you guys have a county dump? You can probably rent a pickup truck and take a few loads to the dump for 1/3 of the price of the dumpster, but it's a lot more physical labor for you.

You should do before and after pictures. I bet they'd be cathartic to look at in the future. We did a "FREE STUFF" on Craigslist when we moved and people came and picked through it, crazy what people will take.

Just make sure it's okay to do it with a rental vehicle. I once tried this with U-Haul and the guy at the dump told me I would be heavily fined if I unloaded it. (He was sympathetic but they use video for enforcement.) I was so pissed. It was just old junk, not construction debris or anything. I wasted about $80 and a whole day for that adventure.

That's an idea, Sandy. Sadly, someone wouldn't be able to use what we'd throw out (wooden cubby/coat hanger system with two legs chewed almost all the way through by dog.....) but it might be worth calling.

I'm a little embarrassed to have a dumpster in front of the house and for people to know we're purging some things.

I don't think we'd fill the dumpster ... but I guess you never know.

I'll put the teenagers next to it with signs that say "free"

There is this large bag you can buy that is the size of a dumpster and then the service comes and picks it up. Considerably cheaper than a dumpster. Young house love did it a few years ago. I'll see if I can find a link later

Do it! You will be so relieved once that stuff is gone. It will be like getting a new home.

And don't worry about the neighbors. It's not their business. They don't really care that much. They will assume that you are renovating. Just do it.

We've done a dumpster once for a large remodel and a second time for a basement cleanout and a small remodel. It was about 250 for a week for a 12 to 20 foot dumpster. That's pretty huge. With the stuff we purged from our basement, we called two separate charities and they wouldn't take it. (Furniture with broken pieces) I was very disappointed, but I suppose it's more work for them to fix it up. So.....it went in the dumpster. At least it was wood or particle board, so I suppose it will degrade eventually.

I'd do it again. 1-800 Got Junk was more expensive for us, but we have a lot of old junk. Somehow, my parents and my husband's parents idea of purging was to pack everything they didn't want anymore in to moving vans and have them delivered to us. Seriously. They each did this twice. We may have to go in to the witness protection program so they don't know where we live. I finally got up the nerve to toss the trashy stuff they sent us.....I figure it's been long enough that they won't know.
