  • I haven't tried another SSC but it's *extremely* comfortable (we probably hiked for an hour earlier this week and she was light as a feather), and very well made. And I really like the cinching aspect. The first time I put her in it, Natalie was a little fussy because the fabric came too close to her face. So I cinched it down an inch, and she was happy as a clam! But I still have that body length for later toddler carrying, and the "leaning the long torso out of the carrier" antics that you had with Daegan. And for smaller babies you should be able to use it easily without an insert, because it can be cinched down to fit them snugly and froggy their legs inside.

I haven't been able to front carry Natalie in my mei tai for almost a year, so it was really fun to wear her on the front all snuggly.

    • I don't know where I'd put D to wear all three! This was my first time wearing K and P.

          • If anyone was thinking about potentially getting a carrier like my fish one, she's going to open the customs list soon. Once you get on the list, it can take several months before you get your carrier. I think it's been almost a year since the last customs list opened. My fish carrier had extras, but it was about 200$ incase you wanted a price reference. You can PM me for more info or you can google BlooKangaroo. There is a facebook page and a yahoo group. You need to join the yahoo group if you want a carrier.

            • Okay Michele, ever since you said to babywear at Disney, it's been weighing on me. DD #2 (15 months) hates it. Can I train her into liking it more? I'm just really thinking that we're going to have to vary-up modes of transportation between the three kids, and it would definitely be easier if the littlest would let me wear her, even if just for a little while. DS will let me wear him, but he kicks constantly. We just found out that there's a physical reason for this, but it still doesn't change the fact that I can't wear him without ending up bruised. So, back to DD - can I make her like or tolerate it? I have a MeiTei, so I'd really like to use that, if possible. Or, should I just give up on the idea?

              • What does she hate about it? Is she arching? Leaning out? Won't be still long enough for you to tie it? I'm assuming you are trying to wear her on your back. Does she tolerate being worn on the front?

If it's a matter of her not being still long enough, try giving her something to occupy her hands to distract her. If she's fighting to get out of the carrier, you could try distracting her by moving quickly doing something active. Like have her "help" you play tag with your son, or hunt out a hanger or something on a shelf that is safe for her to reach while on your back. Try to find an "advantage" for her....I know 15m is young but having older siblings she probably wants to feel cool or big like them...not strapped to mom. Does that make sense? I'm also not above bribery with treats...though you have to choose carefully what you want spilled down your back.

Kai will let me wear him away from the house....not inside. Is there a difference in her behavior if you are at the store? The park? The house? And he will let Russ wear him too. Does she act differently if your DH wears her? Daegan went through a stage where he only wanted to be worn on the front. It was annoying when he was bigger cause his head was all up in my face. But does she tolerate front more than back?

I know you said there was a reason your son kicks, but Daegan used to get his legs going too. I used to just hold his ankles in my hands at my sides. I think it helped settle him.

                • I think the reason DD can't stand being worn is that she wants control over where she is going and what she is doing. She liked it until she could crawl, would tolerate it until she could walk, but then started arching, leaning, and climbing up me to try to get out. I tried to get her in the Mei Tei today and think maybe it is too small to contain her since she won't cooperate. I'm thinking maybe I should invest in an Ergo or a Beco (it's just hard to justify knowing this is our last baby, she's already 16 months and very independent). We also have more of the hiking-style backpack, and I think DS will be able to go in that without kicking the crud out of DH because he's a little further away from the body in that one. Do any of the bigger carriers have straps that will keep her in? I'm really worried, I guess, that she'll find a way to climb out. And, I want to get something that can take a larger child, in case DD does like it so that I can get more than 1 trip's worth of use out of it. Thoughts? Anyone?

                  • I don't think the Ergo or Beco would work. You'll need a carrier w a bigger body to envelope her more and keep her contained. If you don't mind, PM me your location and I can see if I can find a group near you so you could try out different ones. There are a bunch of soft structured carriers that are being made with bigger bodies for older toddlers. There are meitais as well. You want to look for one with a 16 ish inch body. The Ergo is only 13 inches I think. And it's easy for them to get leverage in it to lean or push out if they want to.

                    • D, how is she sitting once she's in the mei tai? A friend pointed out to me early on that the butt should be below the knees. This is both the most ergonomic position for the kiddo and the most secure -- they don't have as much leverage for arching, etc. Once I fling baby onto my back, I tie the waist strap, then hold the shoulder straps and do a few little hops to get baby settled with that butt nice and deep before I pull the shoulder straps over.

Her butt isn't quite low enough here, but you can see that this carrier doesn't leave a lot of room for arching or anything (she was 16 months or so there).

Informative AND it made my heart melt. Even DH said it was incredibly cute. Make sure you watch the whole thing! He said no way in hell to wearing the moby, but I think he might be reconsidering
