Part of me wants to get the Big Boss, maybe because it's called the Big Boss,
I'm really bummed I cant do this! My mom has been bugging me to for years, but it's much cooler with the IMSN ladies do it...Married to a newly minted Pediatric Rad, momma to a sweet girl and a bunch of (mostly) cute boy monsters.

That's a good idea about adding club soda to a juice Miss Martini! I'd like a Breville too but I couldn't justify the cost. It would be nice to put whole apples in the top and not have to cut everything into pieces to fit in the chute. Now that I learned about having a two speed juicer and why it's better for leafy greens I wish I'd gone for something like the Big Boss. I'll have to make due with my $30 Walmart juicer for now. Atleast it has sticky cups on the bottom of it so it doesn't shake around while sitting on the counter. It's pretty quiet for a juicer too. This is the one I picked up. link It is pretty easy to clean too. Takes about 5 minutes with warm water.
One tip I picked up from reading reviews about juicers is put a plastic bag you get from your local grocery store in the pulp bin to catch it all. It makes for an easier clean up when you just lift a plastic bag of pulp out of the juicer to toss in the trash.PGY4 Nephrology Fellow

Yesterday, I had kale, ginger, cucumber, and apple juice. It was spicy (ginger) and I loved it.
I am not fasting right now (BFing), but I do love a good glass of juice.

Anyone have any concern over having a juicer in the kitchen for safety reasons with kids? The main reason we haven't gotten one yet is dhs complete fear that O will put his hand in it & lose fingers. He sees way too many hand injuries at work & it has made him completely paranoid. I figure if we teach O about it and keep it unplugged & up when not in use it should be ok. Any tips, thoughts?Wife to Hand Surgeon just out of training, mom to two lovely kittys and little boy, O, born in Sept 08.

I don't have kids so I can't say for myself Phoebe but I did read on some of these juicer's reviews that parents got them to make juice because their kids were picky eaters and wouldn't eat their vegetables. No comment on if it seems to be working.
I don't know about that one either ides. On mine the chute is a little small and long for little kids to stick their hands in. Not sure about the others. An adult could possibly reach the bottom of the chute with a finger.PGY4 Nephrology Fellow

I unplug and put away everything while not in use. It's the hazard of being married to an ER doc.
I'm not worried about it, but I am really careful. I also have a two year old who is a hazard no matter what, so basically, I have no choice but to follow her constantly. I literally put her in her crib today so I could pee. TMI maybe, but that's where we're at!-Deb

For scientific purposes I just stuck my hand in my juicer chute. I can fit four fingers very snugly but they don't reach the bottom of the chute where the grater is. They're about 2 inches away. I can't get my hand past the bottom knuckles. It seems a child would have to stick their whole arm down the chute to reach the bottom. They'd have to be on the counter or a place they could reach the juicer. It would have to be plugged in and it would have to be turned on. They'd also have to be small enough to fit their arm down the chute. I guess it could happen they could grate their hand.PGY4 Nephrology Fellow

Not trying to be a downer, but don't forget that most fruits and many vegetables contain a substantial amount of carbs and simple sugars. When you juice them, you tend to consume more to feel full than if you were to eat them raw. The overload of sugar makes you feel great for an hour or two but then you crash hard.
That back and forth with sugar can be tough on your body. It's better to maintain a consistent energy level all day.
Juicing is great, but it's really easy to overdo it because it seems so natural and healthy. I would definitely avoid high carb fruits like bananas, oranges and sweet apples, and use more berries or melons instead. Also, adding some nuts will make it more filling.

Not a downer at all, I think that's a really great point to keep in mind. I'm a bit overly sensitive to sugar, including in fruit form, so I had already thought if I joined in I would be doing mostly vegetables but a sugar crash can happen to anyone.Wife of a surgical fellow; Mom to a busy toddler girl and 5 furballs (2 cats, 3 dogs)
