DH has taken two weeks of FMLA -- one for his mom, one for the baby. He has taken extra time here and there, like a half day to catch a flight to take care of stuff with his mom or dad or bereavement leave. The dept has been really nice about not making him fill out the forms each of those times. All of that probably adds up to another week.

Like Annie said, life happens and it pays to be nice to your co-workers. He has certainly done his share in covering for other people. Asking people to cover for him is not nearly as big a deal as it would be for other specialties.

The GME office here told him that he had a total of 10 weeks of FMLA available (after being here 3 years). I guess that he must get 3.3 weeks of "sick leave" per year? He could take all 10, now 8, this year if he needed to and be ok from the paid FMLA side of things. However, I would be surprised if taking that much time at once in the same rotation, except elective or research, would be ok with the dept or accreditation. I don't think he would feel comfortable either with missing 10 weeks of certain rotations like pathology or peds derm.

The program that brought up the original debate is not an official Sabbath-observant program. If we had known this, I think we would have still ranked it (because it's still a strong program). Still, it seems like the dept. misrepresented itself to some degree.

I thought I would update you on this particular Sabbath-observing resident.

The program is discussing a Saturday 7pm - Sunday 7-pm call. So, someone will do Saturday 7am-7pm and come back from Sunday 7pm-Monday 7am (for a total of 24 hours).

What do you think about this arrangement?

The particular resident does not like this schedule, because it would mean that there are weekends where he doesn't have a day off. He says that Sabbath isn't "time off," but rather "time for God."

Alison, I think that is at least a step in the right direction. Poor resident. He can't have every single weekend. Boo fricking hoo. You know how I feel about this time off anyway.

Time off is time off -- he can spend it how he chooses.

                    That's Nellie cracking the whip.

He's just not a guy you'd sympathize with, you know? You'd think that given his special situation, *he* would have come up with a solution like this. But no... He's concerned that he'll lose weekends - weekends that others have lost all along because of HIM!

I'm pretty sure that the Higher Power would understand.

Now if the problem that he belongs to a small group of people (I'm blanking on the word- help out here Jewish people!) that needs 11? 13? 9? people for the quorum (which isn't the word) to hold services then I could understand his feeling upset.

But, then again- I'm pretty sure his Higher Power gets it.

I was thinking more along the lines of him not enjoying this observation of the Sabbath. As in "Have fun at the grocery store, hon! Enjoy your kid free time!" Maybe for him, the Sabbath observation is just a chore so he's not counting it as "time off"? I'm not sure that his Higher Power would understand that. :> It's a strange comment to make. Clearly, time off is just time off. I can't wait until the residents with kids start saying that the weekend off doesn't count as "real" time off because they had to take care of their sick kid or something. This line of reasoning could be endless.

He's just going to have to deal, as far as I'm concerned. Enough of this! It's ridiculous - the dept. has already gone out of its way to allow this guy to observe Sabbath and it's not an official Sabbath residency.

Are you sure? It could explain why he's so desperately needed for services....
