DH has taken two weeks of FMLA -- one for his mom, one for the baby. He has taken extra time here and there, like a half day to catch a flight to take care of stuff with his mom or dad or bereavement leave. The dept has been really nice about not making him fill out the forms each of those times. All of that probably adds up to another week.
Like Annie said, life happens and it pays to be nice to your co-workers. He has certainly done his share in covering for other people. Asking people to cover for him is not nearly as big a deal as it would be for other specialties.
The GME office here told him that he had a total of 10 weeks of FMLA available (after being here 3 years). I guess that he must get 3.3 weeks of "sick leave" per year? He could take all 10, now 8, this year if he needed to and be ok from the paid FMLA side of things. However, I would be surprised if taking that much time at once in the same rotation, except elective or research, would be ok with the dept or accreditation. I don't think he would feel comfortable either with missing 10 weeks of certain rotations like pathology or peds derm.
