  • That's kind of what we are hearing here too. I'm wondering if the kids will start back on Monday or not...

    • Dh's next rotation is in WI and starts Monday when the high is -16. I'm so nervous that our car is going to die because of the cold! I so wish rotation shifts would be cancelled for weather like classes are.

Well, patients can't plan their needs around the weather, so welcome to the life of a medical spouse!

          • Wisconsinites are tough motherfuckers.

He's probably staying close to the hospital so if that happens he can probably take a bus?

Definitely understand that! It's mostly frustrating as a student because he's not really needed. I would feel different about it if he were a resident/attending and his presence would actually be necessary for the benefit of the patients.

I'm with him for the rotation and we've rented an apartment not too far from the hospital. I hadn't thought about busses. That's a good idea. I'll have to look and see if that's an option. First I'm hoping for a safe trip there! We got a hotel room last night so we could take the 10 hour trip in two days. I'm glad we did because we got caught in snow and drove the last leg of last night's trip at 35 mph on the highway!

Anyone know how cold an airplane can fly? He's supposed to fly to interviews on Wednesday. No snow, but the high that day is 3. They wouldn't have to cancel flights for that, would they? Just trying to think ahead in case we need a plan B to get there.

              • I wouldn't think they would cancel flights bc of the cold, it is colder than that at flight altitude.

If there is moisture in the air, there can be problems with icing, but at these temps it is unlikely. It is too cold for the air to hold any humidity.

                • We are expecting 10-12" of snow today and then the temperatures are going to fall/winds are going to pick up. The forecast is for -30 to -40 below with the wind chill. I am thinking I won't be going back to school tomorrow.

Thanks, that's a good point! I'm mostly just nervous. I don't want weather to hurt his chance at a good residency!

I grew up in Alaska, I love the thrill of having the deicing trucks come around and spray down the plane before takeoff. We went on vacation every winter, and usually either took off or landed in negative temps. No biggie.

                          • We have -33F here right now with the wind chill. I pulled out of the garage to take Aidan to a friend's house and a flock of birds flew in. I can't get them out. Don't want to shut the garage door, but don't want the cold air in the garage either... Poor Birds!

                            • Um, it's by no means "warm" here, but our kids were outside playing with their new basketball hoop yesterday in jeans and hoodies.

Regardless, be safe out there! I would be scared to death driving in all this mess. I moved with my DH while he did rotations all over the country during med school. Its a pain the butt even without the added stress of record low temps!! Gezzz, hang in there! KUP!
