Lake effect snow... Oh no! I've never heard that on my local weather forecast.... And I'm not sure I like the sound of it!

Lake-effect snow can be interesting. It frequently comes in bands that can stay over an area for hours and dumps a metric shit ton of snow. We once woke up with an extra 30" of snow on top of the 26" we'd received the day before.

Lake-effect snow is no joke.

Sunny, afternoon highs are in the high 80s with the nights generally in the high 50s. Here in my part of the valley our AM lows are dipping to the high 40s. This, my friends is why folks live here!!

Well at least that's enough to snowshoe - ha. (Something I actually really enjoy). I get the feeling we are just going to have a constant one-two inches of yucky east coast-ish wet snow. Which is worthless and annoying.

Lake effect sure beats ice/bone chilling cold. When it snows here it's real snow and you can do snowy things. Our experience has been that the northeast was colder but the Great Lakes deliver the snow. That said, our last few winters have been kind of disappointing. Only a few major snows! Our first year here, we just marveled at the lake effect snow machine. It was endless. Buy a good snowblower!

I do not, for one millisecond, miss that.

Instead, this week I'll be enjoying high 70's and low 80's.

That said, our last few winters have been kind of disappointing.

Yeah, I wonder if I've ever seen real lake effect snow before because I've only spent the last 2 winters in the lake-effect zone and have so far been totally unimpressed. Just a bunch of ugly grey drizzly slush, no real snow like I'm used to, and the occasional "big snows" were just a few inches that melted quickly. The news would say "we've had 50 inches of snow this year!" and I would look out the window and see wet dead grass and just roll my eyes. And I sort of anticipate it's going to be similar this year now that I've moved further south... I don't think it stays below freezing long enough for snow to really stick around or build up.

People here have been telling me this is supposed to be a bad winter. We shall see!!

So tonight it's supposed to dip down to 32. I have this hanging plant (I actually don't know what it is... Tiny little white flowers) that I am in love with. Is it going to die tonight? I had been considering bringing it in, but it's HUGE now and I can't imagine how many stink bugs could have made a home in there. (I don't see any, but who knows). I don't know why I am so bummed about it.

We were 30 minutes south of Lake Michigan, right on the IN/MI border in South Bend. That ended up being smack in the middle of a very active lake-effect weather area. Lots and LOTS of snow. Sometimes blizzard conditions and frequent sub-zero temps.

I do not miss the weather. I miss the people like crazy, but that weather can go eat a bag of dicks.
