But…I do know something of a "dead legs" feeling. I wonder, what are you doing for workouts, and how often? Last year, I think I did too much, too fast, and I really burned out by July. Every workout had either a joint pain or a sense of dragging exhaustion attached to it. This year I started ridiculously, humiliatingly slow. But, I didn't burn out. I built up, slowly. And five months later I am fitter and faster than I've ever been in my life, and feeling terrific to boot. So…based on my experience, I feel like although running is often pitched as a mental game -- you just have to push through -- now that I'm in my 30s I'm a fan of babying your body's physiological mechanisms for getting stronger. Don't break yourself down to the point you have nothing left to build on, you know? Mentally or physically.
I don't think I'm overdoing it based on what I was doing pre delivery (30-40 minutes of walking 4-5x/week pushing the double stroller).

Now I am usually running with either a single or double stroller slowly OR walking pushing the double and wearing R.

I guess I'm just surprised that I still feel dead legs when I'm running alone. My turnover just sucks and every step feels plodding. I am curious about what an EMG would register for the nerve conduction in my lower legs. It's totally possible this is all in my head but I do wonder...

If R ever slept more than a 90 min stretch, I'd get up and run before Dh went to work but it's just not happening right now.

    • Lack of sleep has huge, broad-ranging effects on your body. It screws with your glucose tolerance, your metabolism, your cortisol levels. http://breakingmuscle.com/health-med...and-your-brain

It's stupid but the song I stick in my head when I want to increase my cadence is "When I'm Gone", the cups song from Pitch Perfect.

          • Apparently the "official" version is about 130 beats per minute, but in my head I can make it go a little faster or a little slower which is why I like it.

I can confirm that; just played it in one window with a "tap for bpm" page up in another window. Dead on 130.

Turns out there are sites where you can plug in a number and it tells you the bpm of a commercial song. I had never heard the term "turnover" before T&S used it, so I looked it up and apparently it's a thing to aim for 180 steps per minute? I'm going to have to analyze some of my brain-songs after my next run. Though the whole reason I don't actually run with an iPod any more is because I shift the rhythm of the songs to match my cadence instead of the other way around. (My version of "Lose Yourself" is a bit faster than Eminem's, while my "Intergalactic" and "Body Movin'" are a good bit slower than the Beastie Boys'.)

I'm going to a studio right now. Right as I was getting into it the studio offered a "challenge" to do X classes/activities in X months and that came with a deal on tuition so I decided to go for it. I believe if I hit 75 points (they actually give stickers) by August 20 I'm in the running for a free year of yoga (which is about what my budget will allow when school starts, haha). If I don't win I have a solid base to practice at home without worrying about hurting myself, and I can always save up for the cheaper class packs and visit as I'm able.

I have no idea how I am going to get this 3mi in today. I need to scoot out the door right at 5:00, run, and then head to class I guess. I was up way too late watching the DNC and slept in today. oops.

                        • Can't believe I'm joining this thread! I took up swimming again this summer. I've been swimming laps 3-4x weekly. IDK what I'm going to do once school starts though. I have 4 hours kid free/week and I'm not spending them at the gym. My gym doesn't have childcare during the time that I can swim.

                          • Gym time really does suck... By the time I drive there, work out, and shower, most of my morning is gone, and it's almost time to pick up DD. If you end up going during their school time, embrace the gym clothes/unshowered look and productively use the rest of your morning!
