      Wow!! Congratulations!!

I have a fitbit now...for anyone who wants to be my friend..I know DH got it for me because he loves his but it seems a little ill timed with my recent "not trying to lose weight" declaration. I also resent that I had to weigh myself in order to set it up.

I also got him a poster of dumbbell exercises like the ones at the gym. He says it's tacky and won't put it up in his office (where the bike trainer and now power blocks are). I doubt I'll return it so if anyone wants it I'll mail it to you.

Oh, hey, I just PMed you -- my PM is tentative because you said you resented it, but I hope you find it fun. Seriously, Fitbit isn't about losing weight necessarily, just getting your heart-healthy movement in throughout your day. You could have estimated your weight, they just need that to estimate calorie expenditure, and within plus or minus 15 or 20 pounds would probably have been fine.

            • I'm considering getting one... Torn because my best friend here has a Jawbone, but more of my friends have Fitbits.

Ran 4 miles on the treadmill. Kids got some playtime at the gym child care. We'll spend the rest of the day playing with new toys and me trying to convince them to retire some old ones. I'm up 3 lbs from two weeks ago... Need to start New Years early and get the eating back under control!

              • I want to throw away all of our holiday treats but DH would kill me. He also seems a bit slimmer these days and I want to make sure his weight doesn't drop again.

                  • WOW! So just for shits & giggles I did the FitBit weight loss help (I'm not TRYING, right?) saying I wanted it to be "kind of hard" -- something like 1.5 lbs a week. So they said I need to expend 2255 calories in a day. It involved a few rounds of jumping jacks in between margaritas. I also logged food -- 1684 which was over budget from their suggested 1515.

So I wake up today and what do I see? Still need to expend 2255 calories but I'm only allowed to eat 1075 calories today!

                    • There are two explanations. First is that you don't have enough data points for Fitbit to come up with a personalized estimate for you, they might be averaging in a week full of "zero expenditure" days from before you got your tracker, you know?

Second is that maybe that readout isn't saying what you're interpreting? Is it on the website or the app that you're seeing the 1075 calories?

The thing I hate is that the second I went below my "goal weight" (which was just an arbitrary number I entered because I remembered being comfortable in my skin and moderately active when I was at that weight in my 20s), Fitbit started hounding me to change my goal because it was now "out of date". Like...is the goalpost seriously always supposed to be moving? No wonder people get so beaten down by the cultural insistence on dieting and weight loss! Ugh! If you don't want to have all that annoyance in your face, I'd at least change it to say you want to maintain. And consider deleting those tiles or readouts from your main view.

Ooh interesting. It just went up to 1542 after working out. I put in I wanted to lose weight at a 'kind of hard' rate just to see. I feel OK with counting calories right now since 700 of my 1685 were from margaritas... I'm gonna transition back to paleo this week too.

So can I only see my friends steps? It doesn't grant access to how hard they work out?

I'm slightly perturbed. I gained 2000+ steps practicing cello yesterday. On my left hand. So I deleted that time but i play cello off and on all day. Doesn't seem fair I should discount all that time. Not sure what I should do once the semester starts again.

                        • Yeah, so all those different readouts have different algorithms, and some of them predict and extrapolate on the fly, while others just calculate based on stuff like your height and weight. I do think that at the end of the day, the number of calories burned is roughly accurate (possibly an underestimate).

I do like counting calories for short bursts, just to get tabs on stuff like the unexpected calories from alcohol and whatnot. But when I start taking it too personally, out it goes, LOL.

The cello playing is a unique problem. :\ I have had friends who had their wristband style Fitbit register steps when they were typing on the computer, too. It's maybe worth considering one of the clip-on styles instead? Anyway one way to override it might be to set your app up to record a "walk" every time you sit down to play. Then stop it when you're done. Theoretically you'll record a "walk" of zero miles, therefore recording zero steps for those exact minutes you were playing. But that could be annoying to have to do every time, or to turn on and off as you get up to check on students and go back to play or whatever. Hrm.

Oh, and you can see "active minutes" on people's profiles, but the app doesn't collect that info in one view like it does for the step ranking chart. Also a lot of people keep that information private. You should be able to see mine though.

                            • I've never had the cello problem, but I get super annoyed that my Fitbit doesn't count steps when I'm pushing the double stroller. I have to remember to clip it on my shoe instead, and the days I forget I get so annoyed. With that being said, I love my Fitbit hr and it totally motivates me to exercise most days. I don't use it for calorie or weight tracking though.
